Guys, not new here, had previous names of DaClipse GS and jase, but thats besides the point. This summer i got my motor rebuilt (just a side note dont know if it will relate) The other day i was driving home from work and when i got in my car i heard a loud squeal...no biggie i thought, belt squeal...hasnt happened in a long time should go away as the belt warms up right? if not some simple spray should take care of it... well got on the freeway and when i got off some 45 minutes later, the squeal was still there....but with it there was this horrible rattle...not the rattle i heard some 8 months ago due to a spun rod bearing....this was something else....i get home and its worse than ever....it appears that when i get the RPMS up, it tended to go away...at idle and at low RPMS its loud. i get home and it sounded as tho it was coming from the timing belt casing....i took off that little notch and separated the black casing the best i could and my timing belt had serious gauges...and i just got the belt replaced this summer with the whole motor rebuild....so im guessing that one of my pulley bearings (which is what it sounded like) went out making the pulley not spin on it's axis, causing the belt to be thrown around and produce gauges; but this is purely an assumption...anyone ever have this problem or know of this problem? is there a specific pulley that this is a frequient or mild occurance? I can drive the car (try not to) so the timing isnt completely off...but this needs to be repaired... and i want to be able to get a mechanic pointed in the right direction with your opinions and expertise....Thanks a million....
jason

i would get your timing belt fixed right away if it has gouges in it. if it slips or breaks you will have some bent intake valves or maybe even broken. its better to go through the trouble of replacing the belt than rebuilding the head.

certainly do not let your timing belt go with gouges in it, You do not want to have to go through another rebuild.

The squeeling could be yoru accessory belts or one of the pulleys, when doing the timing belt you'll reinstall the belts and that may take care of it being retensioned.

I had a problem like that last summer. My sound was loud when it was idleing and quit while i'm driving. I opened my hood and didn't see anything wrong except the noise was coming from the timeing belt cover or whatever you call it. I opend the inspection thingy and saw my belt flapping against the cover. when i turned the engine off, i heard some thing falling...looked under the car and saw BB size metal balls falling. I didn't know what it was at first, turns out to be the idle pully. So... I took the passenger side tire and black guard thing and whole bunch of shit out of the car and finally got to the timeing belt. both of my pullies were dead. It was bad, the metal balls in the pully were gone. I don't know if this fits your sound, but all i can tell you is its not pretty if this is the case. I was lucky (i think) that my valves were ok. I changed out the pullies, belts(all 3) and the alternator out. You might as well do it while your at it. The MITSUBITCHY dealers in TN were going to charge $2300 for the same shit that I have done for less than $300. So, if this is the case, don't let them rip you off. JUST DO IT! Unless you BLINGBLING!

hey copper,
yeah, what happened to you i what i think is happening to me....the bearings are probably gone in my pully(s) causing this head numbing noise....it hurts to hear, its as tho the car is throwing up... thanks for the info this helps knowing that my diagnosis was close to what is going on....by the way....was it a pain in the ass to do it yourself? ive heard horror stories about our timing belts and am slightly intimidated.... any special tools needed? i sure as hell cant afford 2300 if i could i sure as hell wouldnt be driving my 95 eclipse....also, did you end up replacing the entire pullies or was there a bearing kit that you could buy? you said it cost you 300 which sounds very reasonable, is that for the alternator, the belts and _____ ? ? Thanks bro and to everyone that responded

It wasn't really that hard to do yourself. I didn't know jack about cars when I startted. I paid about $300 for both pullies(tension & idle), 3 belts, and an alternator. In the book, it mentions to change out the tentioner(which holds the tension pully in place..but...i didn't have that much money...lol). The only special tool you'll need is a 5 ton three jaw puller thing. You can rent this from autozone for about $40, and they will refund it if you take it back within a year or something. As long as its in good condition, you'll get full refund. This puller pulles out the crank shaft. After doing it myself, I was going through this web site and saw somebody have with a write up about timing belt. So you should check out the "mods" section. Its not impossible. All you need is patience and ego to do this. I went through this process twice. I had to go throu this twice because the second time i was putting AEM cam gears in... But, I was able to do this whole thing in less than a day. If i can be a help, I'll try to help you! BROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM
