#40380, "Symptoms of a spun rod and/or main bearing???"

First what are the symptoms of a spun rod bearing?

Second what are the symptoms of a spun main bearing?

And these symptoms will they change over time. Will these symptoms change when the car warms up?

As always TIA

Brian

ticking sound for one. that's what happened to me. lack of oil and the ticking sound got louder at higher rpms b/c the rod was hitting the bearing. overtime, motor will be fucked. better to fix now than pay for a new motor later.

i bought my car not knowing of the oil burning problem and ran it 2.5 qts low on oil and fried 3 of the rod bearings. It ticked when i hit 2 or 3 k rpms and ticked faster on up. At idle i never noticed it but it definately was obvious when i stepped on it. My mechanic said if i had driven about 15 more miles my engine would have seized. so go get it fixed, cost me 215

Main bearing usually won't spin, as they don't have the same load as the rod bearings do. Signs of worn mains include many of the same signs as rod bearings - noises (ticking, etc), low oil pressure... I can't think of any reason a main bearing would go, but if it does, suffice to say you'll know it. it'd be like crankwalk.

Yeah main woud be a very hard one to spin.

A bad bearing with develope a knock. You will start to notice it once the oil warms up and isn't as thick to fill in the gap in the bearing. If bad enough the oil pressure at idle will drop below aropunr 20psi, if you have an oil pressure gauge, and you will hear a knock coming deep withuin the bottom end.

No I don't have one I was just curious. I have never witnessed one in person so I just wanted to know what the symptoms were. Thanks for the info though, very helpful.

yeah, definately a really loud ticking sound for the rod bearing. mine started ticking about 2500 rpm's and REALLY got loud above 3500 rpm's back in may when i spun my first engine. boosted my 2nd engine to hell, thanks to the CrapTech FPR. i wonder what evil things i'll do to my howell 2.0 shortblock. hopefully it'll last me as long as i own the car... ironically, the ticking noize starts where my turbo now spools. anyways, i'm done now.

That's a GST with a serious case of crankwalk.

it kind of sounded like that when I had it, just put a piece of cardboard in a fan and if you hear something similar coming out of your engine, prepare to spend some money if your car isnt under warranty.
