What is the easiest way to get the head out of the engine bay? I got all my turbo stuff off, I am working on labling and removing electrical connections when they look like they will be in the way or attached to something on the head... Should i loosen the head with the intake manifold on the head still and get it out that way? Or is there a way to get that manifold off before taking the head out? Thanks in advanced, this is a little bit harder to get to then my normal V blocks

You have to remove the Timing belt and cams to take the head off and also if you leave the intake manifold attached, you have to take off the support bracket on the backside of the block that holds the manifold up.
To take the manifold off without the head, I had to get under the car and use lots of socket extensions but I am pretty sure some people have been able to do it from the top side.

some how I don't think you have to take the cams out to take the head off.. hehe.. but definatly the timing belt. unless the 420a is very weirdly designed.

yep, when matt_95tgs and I did my broken piston transplant, we just pulled the head with the intake mani still on, and also the exaust mani, even the turbo stayed on the exaust mani. It actually makes it pretty easy to grab and pull the head off the block, but does increase the weight you have to pull though...both of us on each end of the cylinder head, and it came off nicely. As for removing the cams to get the head off...It *might* be possible to do it with the cams in, BUT the problem lies with getting the needed clearance to get the head bolts out. You can get a socket wrench on the bolts, but you may have problems getting the bolt out of the hole, without hitting the cams. You just may not be able to get the right angle to get the bolts out. We just pulled the cams..its not much more work really...gives you a chance to check out your bearing caps and whatnot..

You can get the head off w/ out taking the cams out but you can't get the bolts out because they hit the cams. So if you are replacing the head bolts then you need to remove the cams also.

Thanks all for the replies. I am an idiot, that i didn't think about leaving that God Forsaken Star Exhaust manifold on. Some of those bolts are a pain to get to!!!!
One question: When pulling the timing belt, do i need to loosen that front motor mount, thus meaning that some sort of a block needs to be used to hold the motor up?
Thanks again!
I will get back started on it tomorrow morning, and I will check the board then

The only reason the motor mount will need to be loosened is to get the crank pulley off. You need the clearance dropping the motor. You can support the engine with a jack.
If you leave the intake/exhaust manifolds on the car, there are twop brackets on the back of the motor that attach the intake manifold to the block. You have to remove these two brackets or it will not come out. If you have cruise control the cruise box is bolted to these brackets.

Well this was my second day (working about 4 hours a day) still the head is on the car. Only thing i have to do now is get the crank acc pully off to get that stupid timing belt covor off. However, i am having one hell of a time getting the engine mount bracket that is attached to the block off. All three of the bolts are loose and move freely, there just isn't enough room to get the bolts out of there, they are too long or something. After I get the timing belt out of there, I just have to loosen and remove the head bolts and pull the head out from there.
Thanks for all the pointers guys, really pays off having the board to lean on for projects no mater how big or small!
