If you have a Chilton's Book and the FSMs, you'll be just fine. You'll need a big breaker bar and an assortment of different tools. Good luck!

Make sure you pull your axles first if you are pulling the engine and tranny. Leave the AC and PS pumps connected and just set them aside. Just make sure you get all the connections on the harness because there are a ton more than you'd think. That's all I can think of.

you don't have to disconnect the alternator either, there are connectors under the intake manifold to look for.

If you have an automatic, you can leave the axles and tranny in the car. Just make sure you find the little trapdoor under the block that lets you unbolt the flywheel from the torque converter. I suspect the manual is the same story, but not sure.

Use duct tape and a sharpie and LABEL every hose and wire you disconnect on both sides. Also have a box of ziplock baggies to store and label bolts, even if you're only going to have it apart for a couple days, you'll definitely want to do this.

Here's how I did mine: (60 pictures!)

Ok I should ask a few more quick questions...First I have a chiltons but I dont remember any sections about pulling the engine (it would be helpfull) only engine overhaul. Also I have 2 different engine stands, my brother is currently using my 1500lbs stand, I have a 750lb stand...How much does ours weigh. Ok now for the IMPORTANT question... Should I pull trans with engine... I have 5 speed and I was assuming that I could unbolt engine from the bell housing and then shift the engine a couple inches to the left to clear the flywheel then up and out..????? Is this totally wrong or no... If I have to can I just drop transmission down then lift engine out? Also I was looking at photos from thedawg and he removed his radiator... Easy to do but is it required?

I pulled a engine out of a 71 Chevelle with my father.....Im starting to think that that is easier then this.

You can't just unbolt the flywheel from the pressure plate and pull out the motor with the accessories on. Even with the accessories off, you have to pull it out at an angle to get it out. What I would do would be to pull the engine and tranny out together with the accessories on. I haven't done it this way before, but I would imagine that is the easiest way. When I pulled mine out, I took all the accessories off, took the head off, unbolted it from the tranny, and pulled it out and it took about 5-6 hours with both XtremeRS and I working on it.

B.T.W. Pulling a 71 Chevelle engine out is a walk in the park compared to this one hehe.

Matt_95tgs -- When you said you took off accessaries then header then unbolted tranmission then out ....Where did you unbolt the tranny at. The bellhousing and engine or transmission and bell housing?

I have put some photes on 1. to show progress 2. to ask Matt_95tgs or anyone else where they would unbolt it so they know what i am talking about since I am just a rookie.

1st take that metal plate that covers the lower portion of the bellhousing off to get access to your clutch/flywheel. Next you want to take a marker and make a line across the flexplate (starter gear) and the flywheel so that you can easily align them when you put it all back together. Next, unbolt the flywheel from the starter gear by turning the engine over so that you can get each of the 4 bolts off. Next, unbolt the motor from the bellhousing and you will be able to slide the motor off of the tranny spline. I'm sure you know where to go from there emoji

Im guessing around 300 lb with the head and tranny off. I could lift it up myself (barely), and I guarentee you that I cant lift 750 lb haha. You'll be just fine.

yeah i still think pulling the motor will be easiest with the tranny still connected to the block. This way, you can leave most small bullshit on the motor, and still pull it out. The problem with just pullilng the engine alone, is that you need a good 3 inches or so to slide the block/clutch assembly off of the tranny spline input shaft. With the timing belt on there, there will be NO way to do that. So you have to remove the timing belt, and all its parts to get enough clearance to be able to slide over the block, and have room before you hit the frame siderail on the passenger side. If I remember right, we still had a hard time getting the right angle putting the motor back in, even with it all apart. Thats why I say pull both as one unit. Pull the axels out, and unbolt everything holding in the motor and tranny. It should come out without having to maneuver it all over the place. Having the hood off of the car will help a bunch also.

So far so good, have everything removed other then axles.... NEED HELP once again... Have no idea how to do this... I want to just drop them off the tranny (maybe its the differental) instead of removing tires and rotor and all that good stuff then the axle... Is it possible to just disconnect axle from tranny without removing it??? I pulled back the seal to uncover this big greasy mess and felt around but there no connector or anything...anyone who knows and can help...thanks

i have had to drop the axels like 3 or 4 times now. so it only takes me about 5 minutes a side with air tools.

You need to take the tires off and get to the axle nut. Once you get the axle nut off, you might to need to get to the control arms so that you can swing the rotor out far enough for the axles to get out of the hole. After that you want to get a crow bar, put it between the green hub and and tranny and just tap at it, just give it a tap tap tap taparoo (couldn't resist, it's a line from Happy Gilmore) until you see it come loose. Oh yes, don't forget to drain the tranny fluid. If you really need in depth detail you can reach me at 203-313-2656. Call after 9 on week days please.

Don't take the axles out of the tranny side w/ out taking them out of the tire side too. It can be done. I did it that way the first time because I was being lazy and thought it'd be easier. It was a bitch to get them out and I ripped the boots on both getting them back in. So they had to be replaced anyway :/
