First off, I know very little about cars. I used to be a Car Audio freak but fast and furios has gotten me interested in performance. The car is a 95 Eagle Talon Esi

My question is this:

Would you do the PVC cold air intake mod or the free air box mod to your vehicle? Basically this will be my first mod to the engine I have ever attempted. It looks to me like you can do either/or but not both because the PVC mod will remove the air box all together, correct? Anyways, let me know what you guys/girls think. Any other advice would be welcomed also.

the pvc mod will give better results, but if it rains a lot where you liv, water can get sucked in the engine and kill it.
With the pvc mod you'll need some kind of conical filter, with the aircan hack you'll want a kn replacement filter.

I wouldn't say it rains here more than other places, so what are the actual chances that rain will get sucked up into the engine and ruin it?

I live in Austin and it happened to me. I hit some standing water and bam, water in the cylinders. For me it was at night and in the dark so I didn't see it till it was too late. Normally it's alright I just avoid lots of water. But there are always exceptions and situations that you can't get away from like me. Just be careful and you should be ok.

Ok, thanks guys. One more questions about the PVC. Why couldn't you just take a conical filter and stick it on the end of the pipe and not use the extension of PVC? Is there a reason for this? Pipe needs to be a certain length or something?

Im assuming you mean put it on the end of your stock intake hose after you remove the airbox right? if so then that will work just fine, i did that to my car when i first got it and noticed a small performance gain. but the point of the PVC intake(or any other cold air intake, like AEM or Iceman) is to get the filter away from the heat put off by the engine...AEM and Iceman place the filter towards the bottom of the front bumper on the drivers side, to suck in the colder air down there, thus increasing HP. i have an AEM cold air intake and it works great, nice sound and definite power increase. ive been told that PVC will give off toxic fumes when it gets hot, i doubt that would be an issue, but is something to think about.goodluck with whatever ya do and welcome to the site!

I use to have a White 99 GS Sport with a Star Stage II Ball Bearing T3/T4 turbo...it was fun untill....well those who remember me know Oh Ya...this is what I have now... a 99' GSX...

I live in seattle where it rains a lot.. almost everyday in the winter, I have a CAI with the bypass valve and haven't had any problems (yet)

I live in Orlando and I had a AEM cold air intake on my car before bypass valves even existed. It was on my car for two years and I never had any water sucked up in it. Been through hurricanes and many thunderstorms. You just have to be careful in the rain. Remember that our cars are NOT submarines!!!

If you are gonna go, go all out. Just save up for a short Ram or the cold air intake. You take more risks with the PVC. Welcome to your new home. Choose your parts wisely and make good judgements on them.

does anyone know what it takes to install an aem bypass valve? i have an injen CAI. do you have to cut it, or what?
