ok, im having some problems here.. and i need some help....

last night, im driving the car and exiting th freeway like normal... and the car starts to bog down, and then dies... not sure what the problem was, checked the engine bay, and nothing looked out of the ordinary.. so i try to restart the car, and it just cranks and will not turn over. i have power to all my accesories and the radio and amp power up fine as well... but i did notice that my inline fuel pump, and the stock fuel pump, was not starting up...

that brings me to this problem.. what could cause the fuel pump to not start up? i tried switching the fuel pump relay (the one on the right when you are in front of the car and are facing the engine bay)... and no luck.. what else could cause the fuel pumps to not turn on?

is there anything that im missing? ive pretty much narrowed it down to the fuel pump, because everything else is working.. and neither the stock fuel pump, or the inline (MSD) is turning on.

i am looking for any and all help... please! tia!

did your car start eventually or did you have to tow it home.. i have almost the same problem and i have a post on it currently...is it still dead?

well... i just read your post.. stupid of me not to even check it out in the first place... my car never started again.. it just sits there cranking and will not turn over. ive tried replacing the fuel pump relay, but that did nothing. i dont think it is the ecu, b/c it would appear that everything is in working condition.. no cels, but like in you situation.. my damn car wont start.. and now it is just sitting in a parking lot.. and im praying that it wont get towed.

i have decided that it must have something to do with the pump, whether it be getting correct power to it, or if it just died. tomorrow im going to hit with a volt test to see if there is any current being sent to the pump. when you turn on the car to the on position, you can hear the initial start up of the fuel pump (at least the aftetmarket one) and im not hearing that at all.

couple more questions... if the stock fuel pump goes bad, and will not start up, will that make the inline fuel pump not turn on? i used the same power wire from the stock fuel pump to power up the inline. and i grounded the inline to the chasis. am i missing something here?

also, mitsumanny, where are you located? im in so cali too.. and if one of us should happen to solve the problem.. we should hook up and help eachother out. plus there is a so. cal. meet coming up later in the month, check out the anouncement section.

thats what i was thinking, but i already replaced the relay, and i am in the same spot as before... is there any more fuses/relays that im over looking?

also, just to verify again... is the relay for the pump the one nearest the engine, or further away from the engine?

If you did not wire up an additional relay to power the inline pump, then i will bet money you blew the fuse for the stock fuel pump. The amperage needed to power the inline exceeds the rating for the stock pump wire and fuse circuit. You need to use the stock fuel pump wire(black with blue stripe at the stock pump) to turn on a relay that uses a battery feed to power your inline pump. By connecting the inline to your stock power fuel pump wire, you drew too much current through it, and blew the fuse, most likely. And the stock fuel pump relay is the one that is on the left side, looking at the engine from the front of the car. Its the one that would be closest to the engine, not the fender. The fuse *should* be under the fuse block under the hood. Def rewire it using a additional relay to power your inline pump. If you need info on how to do it, just let me know. I'm surprised you didnt blow a fuse sooner than this..

I had the same problem just like you guys one day it was the fuel pump relay but it was the one closest to the fender good thing my mom has the same car cause I used hers. I eventually replaced it with a relay from autozone I think the part number was MR76 just ask the guys at autozone for a fuel pump relay for a 95 neon because if you ask for the relay for your DSM they will say they have to order it. when you do get the relay reset the ECU first then put the relay in.I live here in SoCal too i live in lancaster, palmdale ,altitude sucks up here ()

still havent had a chance to touch the fuse.. its still sitting at my friends neighborhood where it broke down.. only problem is, that i live like 40miles from him.. and i have work all week. so ill attack it as soon as i find some free time... having my car down sucks! im located in west covina. good luck with the ecu and keep me posted with your progress as well...

tommyboy, do you race at lacr? im up there every now and then.. not as much as i want to, but occasionally.. its one of the closer ones to me, and has more open sessions than the rest around here... and yea, the altitude sucks! i thought it was the relay myself, but i changed it out, and the problem still occured... so it might be the fuse for the fuel pump that i didnt know about, or it may actually be the fuel pump itself. im going to try and get down there to work on it tomorrow after work.. hopefully XtremeRS is right..

I agree with Extreme. I bet it is the fuse under the hood. Those things are a bitch to find too. I had to go to 3 different auto parts stores to find them. They were all out. But I would be willing to bet its the fuse.

ok.. update time... and more help time....

it was the fuse under the hood.. so i replaced the fuse, and i followed xtreme's instructions to rewire the inline pump with a seperate relay and powered it up with a hard wire from the battery.

i then turn on the car, and it actually turns over this time... hell yea! i turn off the car and put some tools away, then go to turn the car on to leave, and it pops again... i replace the fuse again, and it doesnt start up this time, it just pops.. i replaced that fuse 3 times now, so obviously, i have a short of some kind and now im clueless again... any suggestions? from what i can tell, there are no cricks/crimps in the wiring so i cant find any exposed wires... dont know where to look now..

once, again.. i have checked all the wiring for the inline pump and its cool... and i have not touched any of the stock wiring (aside from the fuel pump)... so now i dotn know where to look. could it be the inline pump itself causing these problems? i did notice that the fuel pump did fluctuate in loudness from time to time... from loud to quiet... are inline pumps supposed to fluctuate? or are they supposed to remain constant the entire time? i have been running on this fuel pump for the last three+ months and have no problems until now.

ANY help is appreciated....

How exactly is your relay wired? It should be like this:

pin 85= chassis ground
pin 86= black/blue wire from stock fuel pump wiring
pin 87= 12V battery feed, fused at the battery
pin 30= 12v output to inline pump's red power wire

black wire of inline pump goes to chassis ground. Be SURE your grounds are tight,and on BARE metal..
There is a possibility that you damaged the stock fuel pump..not very likely, but possible..

If it keeps blowing the stock fuse, you either have a short somewhere, or the stock pump is shorted out. Its very possible that you melted the stock fuel pump wiring by drawing too much current though it before...try disconnecting the stock fuel pump, and just run the inline..the car may not run of course, but see if it blows the fuse with the stock pump disconnected...if it does blow the fuse still, then suspect a shorted fuel pump wire somewhere...if thats the case, try running a new wire to turn on both of your fuel pumps..any ignition wire that turns on with the key and stays on will work...

i will definitely try to see if it is the stock fuel pump.. maybe the ecu?? my car is getting old (141k).. i just really hope that, this is the problem... b/c i really dont want to have to try and find the short... i can be in a million places, and it could just be a wire that got snagged. damn, electrical probs are the worst

i had this exact same problem. sept i have the intank pump. i never found any fuses blown. my car turns on now but dies 2 sec later. i hear the pump fluctuating just like you do. whats up with that? why would it do that? if/when you find out what it was let me know plz. my car is still down. haha
