#39129, "Catalytic converter and emissions and CEL question."

Okay, I am sure that my cat is bad or about to go because quite often it stinks like rotten eggs and my performance and gas mileage has gone down lately. But my main question is, if I am going to go through the trouble to replace it, should I just buy a High flow cat or the stock cat. I dont want to have to pull the cat when I go to emissions testing, and I dont really want to drive around with a CEL either?
Comments, suggestions?
Thanks,
Chris b.

Having Problems? Heres my Three step solution to anything 2gnt related.
Step 1: Put down everything in your hands.
Step 2: Grab a lucky strike, Smoke it.
Step 3: Walk to the fridge, double fist some keystone ice, sit down in the shade, drink one beer, finish cigarette, drink other beer, roll a joint, smoke it, walk back to your problem, and in about 5 minutes the solution will come to you.
If not. Go here: here

If still nothing, your trying to hard. Start over at step 1.

>quite often it stinks like rotten eggs

if it smells like that when you have the heat on, you need a new heater core.

just hollow out you cat like was mentioned. you will get a
CEL as long as your O2 sensors are good, but you can put a resistor on the rear O2 sensor to keep that from happening, i'm not sure were the info for that is posted but its on this site somewhere.
i happen to have a bad front 02 sensor and get no light.

It is not the heater core. All I was wondering is if I put on a High flow cat will I have emissions problems or CEL problems.

The only problem with a high flow cat is that you won't see much of a gain with it in comparison to the test pipe. emoji
But you won't get the CEL, and you will pass emissions.

Is an aftermarket high flow cat cheaper than getting a stock cat from Mitsu? If I dont see much gain, that would be the only real benefit I suppose.

I have a Test Pipe and haven't gotten a CEL. I can't imagine why a high flow Cat would cause problems.

I gutted my cat and sported the CEL for quite some time. You can get a resistor however and solder that to the gray wire on the rear O2 sensor to get rid of that code. Pretty soon though all the states will no longer do emmisions testing and will just do the OBD2 test on all cars equipped with the system. Basically they will check the PCM for codes and it can also tell if the codes have been cleared recently. So if you do get a test pipe or gut the cat just solder that resistor in place and you wont get a CEL
