well, found out my head gasket was the part that was leaking. how much is this going to cost? im just looking for a ballpark figure. should i get any certain kind of gasket, or are they all pretty much the same?

Get the stock HG. It's a MLS (multi-layer steel) HG. Don't settle for anything else.

The HG itself might cost you $30-40, but you might as well call Bob Kise (do a "search" for his info) and give him a call. I think I paid about $80-100 or so for a head gasket kit. That takes care of all the gaskets from the head on up.


Most of the costs are in the labor do this sort of job, and there's a lot to do. You might as well have a new timing belt installed at the same time. I suggest only buying a new timing belt and tensioner if you have less than 100k. If you have more, get all the pulleys as well. Those parts will run you close to another $150. If you have some mechanical aptitude, you may want to do this job yourself. In all, you may have to pay someone $300-$500 to do this job. I'd say Mitsu will ask for a few hundred more. The HG is accompanyied with instruction on properly preparing the surfaces to seal.

I also recommend having new valve seals put in, along with having the head resurfaced. This may run you another $100-150 from a machine shop. Don't forget about new head bolts(ARP studs if you want to splurge).

i already have a timing belt and water pump.im thinking about throwing on a underdrive pulley while its all being done, shouldnt cost much more i wouldnt think. does everyone pretty much use AF/X? what are apr studs, where do i find them and are they better? and other than valve seals what comes in the head gasket package, i just bought a valve cover gasket and tube seals. thanks for the info.

well i got an estimate. its 1326 for headgasket and all the other gaskets from the head up, also they are resurfacing it, replacing my timing belt, tensioner, waterpump, valve seals, and maybe a few other things that would go in there. this place gives a 12 year/12k mile warranty on all the parts and labor. does this sound like a good deal? i really need to learn to do this stuff myself.

that is a little high, dealer told me 1200 bucks and Ive seen as cheap as 7-800 bucks for it, but if you get a warranty and its a good shop then go for it, but I think it can be found for cheaper
