Well today just for fun, I hit 145mph in my car. I just lowered it recently too. It took forever to go from 135 to 145, but it did. I was at 145mph in 5th gear at 6200 rmp. What is the top speed on 2GNTs? If rev limit is 7300 I am guessing 170-180ish. These cars are geared pretty high. I think if I had more top end power then I could get to 160mph.

BTW, I was alone and I have brand new tires that are rated to go up to 189mph.

Thats pretty fast. Ive been a little over 120, that was on the highway chasing a Jetta VR6 through traffic 120 was pretty fast, especially when everyone else is going 75.

I got up around 140 b4. I finally quit. There was more room, but the car just wasn't pulling hardly at all anymore b/c lack of power and I didn't wanna blow the motor straining to try and hit some 170. lol. scary as shit tho. of course people say the speedometer is off at those speeds. Who knows without radar, and lets hope we don't get clocked to find out an exact speed.

I've done 155mph no problem(except for EGT's approaching 1600). I believe we are gear limited somewhere around 170mph.

hmmmm... interesting. I have a 99 gs turboed and my car stops at 125 because of high rpms, how is it possible for a non turbo eclipse to reach higher speeds?

In response to 9D9 Mitsu RS if you get clocked at 140 you will be eating sprinkle coated doughnuts from the cops rump...=( I believe here in MS over 110 is Jail time/ Car Impoundment but hell I have done about 145 don't quote me on that probably anywhere from 140-150 all I have to say is wait till the day you take drastic masures at those speeds your car will top out at about 90 due to driver beliefes =P
I was diong about 125-130 on I10 Highway and wen't to pass a 6 Cyl Mustang (we where racing a bit) and the old woman (her kind = motor running but no one behind wheel if you know what i mean) anyway the seenile old crazy woman in her caddy thought it be best if she switched from fast to slow lane so we could pass the only problem was because i was giong 130 and her old amnesia struck brain took about 30 seconds to click in she started changing lanes once i was already beside her. I flew over into the emergency lane (this is at 130 just leaving a bridge siderailing still there) and came about 3" from becoming pavement puddy... I tell you what if their was coal in my seat I woulda crapped out a diamond, I drove no higher than 85mph for the next week or so till my stomach dropped back into orbit... Then is was back to 130 =D

I topped out at 130 stock, well just got too scared to to go any higher.. oh with lighter rims and z-rated tires... I miss those.. sniff sniff the other day I was chasing am eclipse gts at about 120-130mph...that thing moved... then I pulled over for some grubbin' ... needless to say 15 mi leter I saw that eclipse on the side of the road with a porkster next to her ... she was nice looking too... oh well, only thing now that limits me because of the star stage 2 is the egts not the power....

you have also consider drag. if you have on a body kit and such, it makes the car a little more aerodynamic, reducing the drag. although not all body kits will do this, exp. a spoiler that creates downforce on the rear will slow down a fwd car at high speeds.

With stock 205/55-16 tires (24.878") our cars will top out at 162.6mph at 7300 rpm (electronically limited)
In my case with 225/40-18 (25.087) My car will pull to 163.6mph at 7300 rpm (electronically limited)
Now this is interesting, with the stock tires size and the SOHC Neon gearbox conversion with enough power we would break the 200mph barrier toping out at 202.8mph!!!!!!

lol, right. in theory. that's assuming that you have enough power to overcome drag which happens to go up as a cubic with speed.

First of all I'm only speaking on behalf of the 5-speed Manual Gearbox. I can't speak for all years but I know my 99 has no speed limiter what so ever Are you automatic LeakyMitsu??

An eclipse will never push past 200 mph, regardless of gearing without serious aero enhancements and a 4g63 motor pushing at least 500hp.
Whoever said drag increases at the square of velocity was right. 200mph requires four times the hp than 100mph does.

Why did you say 4g63 motor????? If your all strung out on the 4g63 go buy a GS-T or X. I'll race a 4g63 any day of the week. They have nothing over us other than a stonger "factory" motor when turbo. I'm not dumb and I do know it takes a chunk of power to run to 200mph but never say never

either or, i wasnt trying to be specific about the actual engine... just the power aspect. If you can get 500hp out of a 420A reliably, then your better than most people.

our cars haul some serious top speed considering the price of my little rs. i like the fact that we are so areo dynamic. unlike most cars in our range, when we get up over freeway speed, our cars dont shake like a bucket of sheet metal. infact my car feels less shakey and rattled over 100mph as it does below 80. i know half of that is because i can hear the sweet noise of an engine yelling, but also above 100 i can totally feel the car sucking down to the ground if that makes any sense. i dont know where but i think somewhere here i read that our cars were made with an exceptional high speed disign. am i the only one who's been led on to believe this? oh and ive been liking the idea for a while about swapping in the neon sohc gear box for a longer top end. more specifically id really like to just swap the fifth gear from a sohc neon in place of the fifth in my gear box so i could have a higher speed per rpm while cruising down the freeway 90+. im not looking to go out and kill myself going 200 on the highway, just want to give my car some ease on the long runs. does anybody have a clue how much something like this would cost to have done? i dont feel like getting into tranny games on my own. tia

Well, with our coeffecient of drag being what it is stock, around .29 (for the later 2G bumper, .28 for the early 2G bumper w/ low spoiler), it shouldn't be too tough to make it scream up to supercar speeds... A 6th gear would help, too, but I won't ask for miracles. Maybe a letter to PVO to have a 6 speed option with a factory LSD on the SRT-4 would be in order, though, especially if it has equal length halfshafts... Ah well. It would take a fair amount of HP to make 200 MPH, but not too much more power then a Ferarri. To put this into perspective, the coeffecient of drag of a Diablo is .31. Hehe... Gotta love the design of this car.

of course, the lambo makes downforce at speed whereas the stock eclipse body does not....Downforce will hurt top speed but keep the car to the ground.

oh ok, yeah that is pretty awsome. i guess that explains why our cars can easily break say 130....but my car still feels stable as hell. where as with my homeboys supercharged miata, you can bring it up over 100 in a quick second, but anything near that fast and you can feel the damn car lifting up. and anybody else's car's that i've been in just never feel as stable as my car at high speeds. they probably dont start lifting real bad like the miata because they arent nearly as light. but with simliar non areodynamic qualitys as the miata, and a lot heavier/less hp car, it makes sense that they dont lift but still feel really unstable. god our cars rule, areodynamics almost as perfect as a diablo for high speed capabilitys, but just enough downforce to keep us stable and not slow us down a whole lot. thanks to everyone for clarifying all of this.

hmm fastest I've gone in my car is 140 hehe make sure you got Z rateds tires b4 you try stuff like that hehe. At 140 it was starting to slow down but could still go if'd wanted to. At 140 you start passing stuff pretty fast O_o

stange, i had the same thing, i dont think the car liked going nearly 140. it didnt feel like fuel cut though...it wasnt violent. it was more of a "started shaking like shit and groaning, before finally dropping drasticly in speed".

let me also say that it is nearly impossible (i dont see how other autos have done it) to get above 120 with an eclipse (auto). i hit NEARLY 140, but that was on a long, LONG stretch of downhill interstate. on level ground the fastest ive goin is 120. also let me say that ive only done either of those once. otherwise, ive not gone faster than 85-90 in the 4 years ive had the car.

i managed to take an 89 dodge colt to 110 one time, and sent a rod through the oil pan. that was fun.

i've gone 115, but my car was crawling along and i got into traffic. i guess it doesn't help i had the windows down and the moonroof open, or that my car has 163,000miles and is in dire need of a rebuild among other things

Having Problems? Heres my Three step solution to anything 2gnt related.
Step 1: Put down everything in your hands.
Step 2: Grab a lucky strike, Smoke it.
Step 3: Walk to the fridge, double fist some keystone ice, sit down in the shade, drink one beer, finish cigarette, drink other beer, roll a joint, smoke it, walk back to your problem, and in about 5 minutes the solution will come to you.

If still nothing, your trying to hard. Start over at step 1.

5th at 3k rpm is around 70 depending on tire size
4k rpm is 92.5ish depending on tire size
5k rpm is 115 ish depending on tire size
6k rpm is 138 ish depending on tire size

its linear so you can figure out what 3500, 4500 and 5500 are from those numbers. those are close to actual speeds. As actual speeds will depend on the tire size. im not sure what size was used for these numbers but i can look it up real quick. i know with 235/40/18 i could hit 172 at 7300 rpms in 5th. with my stock 195/70/14 i could hit 168 at 7300.


the drag force for an object is...D = 1/2CpAv^2 where C is the drag coefficient, A is the effective cross sectional area and v is the velocity. that is for a falling object so with an object moving along the ground you must also add in friction so the drag force would be roughly D = 1/2CpAv^2 + Friction force friction force is euqal to umg where u is the coefficient of stati friction mg is the weight of the object...so i coudl sit here and figure out what it would take but im not in the mood. ill try to figure out exactly how much force we would need from our car to hit say 170 and 200 mph. ill get back and let you all know

B'ing furious @ my then g/f (now wife), getting up 2 145 C'md pretty EZ 2 me. I'll 2nd the comments that the faster I went the more stable it felt... & there was still more power 2 keep going no prob. Only reason Y I backed off was cause I had no radar detector w/ me @ the time (not that it'd help 2 much) & fear of getting busted. But hey, I made a 3 hour round trip in about 45 minutes (Average of 145).

Had stock 14's @ the time, that may have made a difference in acceleration although it'd B neat 2 try w/ my RX-7 16x8 now (haven't yet, more control).

its funny, when im on the highway, im almost always the fastest person on the road . Get this, im going down I-435 north and i get to this part of the highway where there are concrete dividers and its a straight away with no possibility of cops being there. So i crank the baby up and get to 125 and i come over the top of a hill and the highway takes a kind of sharp left. OMFG, ive never been so scared when i started to hit the brakes around that turn and my backend slid out sideways and i drifted around that turn at 125 mph.

110 is what my car tops out at,115 going down hill... it's an auto,but hopefully that will change after I drop the other motor in it

Got mine to 137 in my A/T It took forever. There is definately a speed limiter that kicks in at 115 and 120 in my M/T.
