The past few days I notice when I start the car it's rougher at idle. Today I noticed dark smoke followed by the exhaust shooting a lot of small black dust. Sure I'm running crazy lean but why? Also my A/F gauge has been acting weird but no CEL? Anyone?

Your O2 sensor could be going bad, thus the rought idle and sporatic a/f readings. If this is the case, the ecu will go into "safe" mode, making your car run richer.

How do you tell when the o2 has gone bad by looking at it? And what should I expect to pay for it from the dealer?

In general, the cel would come on if the o2 sensor went bad, but not always.
What I do know is; the front o2 sensor (in front of the cat) is $99 at autozone, and the rear o2 sensor (behind the cat) is $89 from autozone.
Hope that helps a little..

98RsT, dude you car looks like mine did this past spring & summer. hehe. Nice.

The CEL came on today, so that has to be it. I should have Autozone read it. Will the CEL give a diff number for front and rear o2? TIA

Front O2 sensor from Satan is $150!! I got mine for $100 threw dealer discount from Land Rover. The CEL code will say if its front or rear sensor. Like Bank 1 Sensor 1, which is what I have right now. My car feels really sluggish especially up top mostly because if your running to rich and u got a bad O2 sensor to much fuel is being dumped in. Getting crappy gas mileage? Im getting 15 mpg currently while babying my car. You can do a volt meter test to see if your O2 sensor is working. The code I cam up w/ for my O2 sensor was P0133, also you might get P0172 System running to rich (Bank 1). Good Luck.

i spit out code 21 and found out it was my upstream o2 sensor, so i got one off nopi for 33 bucks shipped to my door made by ngk/ntk, code 21 also mean down stream o2 sensor, however the downstream o2 sensor is there for emisions only, it will not make u run safe mode if it goes bad, only the front will, hope this helps any, did u try the key dance, thats what i did......

Boostless and loving it!
Way to many mods to list!

I'm going to Autozone to have the CEL checked again. I'd like to go to the dealer but the closest is 45 min away and I might not make it. I turned it on today since I just got back from vacation. Same black dust, but today new issue. At idle it died on me, after 3 times, when it was going to die I'd gas it and it would go away of course I had almost no fuel. I filled the tank and 10 min later it went away. We'll see what happens tomorrow. What is a sign of fuel pump or FPR failure?

I had it checked and code P0171 came up. "The fuel system for bank 1 was too lean. (Bank 1 identifies the location of cylinder#1, while Bank 2 identifies the cylinders on the opposite bank)" They suggested a bad O2 or possible fuel injector failure. Anyone?

maybe you let the gas get so low that you sucked up all the crap from the bottom of the gas tank and it clogged your injector

Or it could be the o2 sensor, jsut change it anyway since you said you were getting wierd a/f readings Im guessin thats the culprit
