#383, "need some help with PCM trouble codes......."

This may sound wierd, but I have tried to use the on off key trick to get my trouble codes via the flashing CEL light, and it does not work every time. Some days, my car simply will not do anything, including the '55' code. And today, it did it just fine. However, whenever I get the codes to flash, I get code 12 and then code 55. Thing is, I have not reset my ECU or PCM for a long time. I try not to reset it ever. Code 12 as I understand it, means that the ecu has been reset in the last 50 key on strokes. I know for sure that in the last year or so I have started my car more than 50 times, or at least put the key to the on position. Hell, I put the key to the on position more than 50 times just to get the codes to flash.

Also, I have not brought the car to anybody that might have reset the ECU. I do most of my own work on the car. The last place I brought it too was a tire place to get new tires, and that was over 6 months ago.

Is there a posibility that my ECU is reseting itself everytime I start or stop my car? The only reason I am curious about all of this is that my car gets bad gas mileage and the exhaust smells real rich like gasoline. I have changed just about everything I can think of to fix something like this, including the expensive items like O2 sensors. My car is a 96 GS and just tripped over 40,000 miles. Does anyone have any suggestions or comments on this?

The gasoline issue is really common.. I got a 95 RS and it does the same. You walk next to the back right side tire and you can smell the gas after a hard drive. I believe it has something to do with the recall they had having to do with a bad seal back there on the gas tank or something like that. The ECU shouldnt be resetting either. You havent killed you're battery or anything like that?

BTW you can check out the recall on the main 2gnt.com page under recalls.. I worked for GM and believe me, some cars will experience the issue listed in the recall but will not be covered under the recall due to a vin breakdown the factory comes up with.. Might check the recall out and see if its related. I'm almost sure mine is...

No, I think my battery is fine. I get about 13 volts and the car starts without problems. I smell the gasoline while the car is running. I dont smell anything until I first turn my car on, then I can smell it coming out if the exhaust when I back up. After a drive I turn my car off, I can smell it for a little bit, but by the time I can figure out what it is, you cant smell it anymore. My exhaust tips are covered in black sooty stuff. I think that is normal, but I can scrape it off with my finger.

BTW, I have a sub box and a capacitor on the amp, could that be a problem? The cap is wired in parallel to the amp.
