#38137, "botched cam gear install???"

i just got my 60k mile service done and since the mechanics where in there i got them to install my aem cam gears. i know about the timing marks being off, so i told them about the easy fix, by laying the stock ones on top of the new ones then scribing the new marks. now that i have the car back the cams are set at 0, but the idle is real lopey. i know that if the cams are set to 0 then thats is the same as stock, just double checking that that is the right way to get the aem gears to work and that the gears must be off a tooth. this was done at the local vw dealership, which are surprisingly cool and well priced. that have done other work on my car before and everything has gone well. side effect is that my car makes great power from about 3500-5000, but then falls off alot after that.

the only thing i can think of is to make sure that the crank is at TDC when you are checking the gears for alignment. The marks can line up perfect up top, but if the crank isnt aligned with the TDC mark, then the timing is off.

are your cam gears new? The newer ones, i'm pretty sure the timing marks were fixed... so you shouldn't have had to change them.

try usging the normal marks on them i bet its fit i havent heard anything about fuged marks on the neon side for aems only that the old style botls were crappy, use the standard marks, if its lopey do u have more power ?
=) lopey usually means power in v8's oops its a 4 cyl darn...

You can have it cheap, fast or good. Pick any two.

If you want it cheap and fast, it's not going to be good.
If you want it cheap and good, it's not going to be fast.

Thats what it is... mine did the same thing... the marks were on but the crank was off. i had a lopey idle also... by the way.. i would get that fixed.. it isn't hurting anything, but you will notice a nice difference in power...

anyone ever thought of a drive-thru parts store? that would be cool!
