#37925, "Vtec cams........................Yes its possible, not just for hondas"

I was reading my friends older issue of sports compact car when i see a picture of a 4G63 and a caption at the bottom of a small pic that says "these vtec cams for the mitsu 4G63 and another engine (i dont remember) are just out in japan. Does any body have info about em or if they are going to be made for our cars?

P.S. it was the issue where they built a 240sx into a JDM 180sx sr20det

None for the 420A but why would you want them, just build up the internals with high compression pistons and throw in some Crane or Crower Drag cams! }> }> }>

no.. youre thinking of VVTL-i.. which is toyotas version of VTEC... VVT-i is just like having a set of cam gears that the ECU controls

drag cams = high lift and duration big beefy cams like 22 for a 2.0 it'll lope like big v8's =)

You can have it cheap, fast or good. Pick any two.

If you want it cheap and fast, it's not going to be good.
If you want it cheap and good, it's not going to be fast.

in all out drag cars such as Lisa Kubo's Civic VTEC is not even used. The extra low RPM cam lobes and finger followers (rocker arms) are just dead weight when the engine is spinning and high RPM where VTEC would be used. This causes a loss in hp because of the added weight, hence less rotating mass = more hp. That's why Toda Racing has come out with hollow-core VTEC "Killer" cams where the primary/secondary lobes are eliminated.

And who ever said VTEC is for pussies is a dumb ass. In no other car, save for the new Celica GTS has any advancements like this. Not only does VTEC deliver great around town drivibility and excellent gas mileage, but at the same time offer the hi-performance of your non-pussy "drag" cams that are totally unstreetable.

advanced ? wrong . the theory of variable valves has been around a while , and honda was not the first to come up with it. Its not limited to honda and toyota either, most of the cars out there havre something to do with this in on way or another , they just dont make a huge deal about it. Jaguar, VW and others have this in their engines.

I've always liked the looks of the FTO. Neat car, I wish Mitsu would have offered it here just so I could see what it is like.

Variable valve timing is not new. It is a very old idea, if I remember correctly the first diesel engines had a basic form of variable valve timing, it was the only way Dr. Diesel could get it to work right.

VTEC, variable valve timing is just a way to get the best of both worlds. It will give you an economy cam for your low end so you get a rock solid idle and excellent gas mileage, then kick in a very high performance cam (or performance timing profile) for the top end which wouldn't normally work at all on the bottom end.

It is essentially like having a race cam for your top end AND an economy cam for the bottom end all at the same time. Perfect for a street car or an autocross car where you are running over a wide rpm range. For a race car it is superfluous.

Look at the specs of any high hp output VVT VTEC (whatever) engine. They don't make much torque. The actual amount the engine is pushing for foot pounds isn't all that much, but the engine is doing it at a higher rpm than we are which (just doing the math) ends up giving you alot of HP.

If you are building a race engine you don't care about bottom end, so you get rid of the VTEC system entirely (like all top end honda drag racers do) and use a race cam only and there is less valvetrain weight, less overall weight, and less stuff to break.

Ohhh... so thats why our Celica is so damn slow off the line? emoji Naw, its pretty funny when I race someone. They kill me off the line, so they are all happy and thinking they kicked my ass. Then I get into "lift" and fly by them LOL. I don't know about the Hondas but the Celica is very loud when I get into lift, especially with the intake on it. I get accused of spraying all the time because of the increased noise all of a sudden, then I pop the hood and they feel pretty stupid.

Advanced? Right! Actually Honda was the first and until recently was the only to incorporate a varible timing/lift valvetrain. As most other cars only use a varible valve timing with no changes in cam lift. Jaguar, BMW, Toyota (VVT-i only), and Nissan used only an electronic timing system.

I hope you are not implying that the Celica GT-S motor doesn't have a variable lift valvetrain, because it does. The GT motor does not incorporate this. It sounds like that is what you were saying, I get lost in toyotas engine codes.

No, I was saying that only until recently was Honda alone on the varible timing AND LIFT valvetrain, then Toyota jumped on the bandwagon with their VVTL-i set-up.
