#37852, "Emergency Brake wont hold anymore, what to do?"

Yep,

My emergency brake no longer really holds my car even in the driveway anymore. I have to bring the sucker up to like 15 ticks before i even get anywhere. When it is down, or off, there is a TON of play before i can even get 1 tick off. Is there some cheap, easy way to fix? like tighten it up, or something?

Thanks Guys!

Adjust the e-brake drum. Take off the wheel, and there's two rubber plugs in the rotor that cover the sprocket. Use a flathead to turn the spocket.

really does that work for disc parking drums too? You can also adjust the ebrake line. Inside your center console you'll see the ebrake line that's hook up to the lever. There'll be a small long nut on it disengage the ebrake then tighten the nut, it should get stiffer as you tighten it. Just adjust it to how you want it. But if your ebrake is like mine and adjusted all the way and it's not biting that hard (haha damn drifting) then the way DarkOne pointed out might help more, haha crap I'm gonna try that tommorow.

Here, open the center console (place where the ashtray and cup holder with lid) and check the resistance of the cable. Just use your nails to pry it out, it's like one whole plastic unit. Once taken out, there's a small nut (you'll see it) there that can come loose over time, just tighten it back up.

I'd also say to take off the rear drums and check your brake shoe linings. I'm sure they are either really worn, or there is just too much play between the shoes and the drum, making you pull wayyyyy up on the ebrake lever. Pop off the drums, and like Dino mentioned, there will be a little "starr" adjuster wheel at the bottom of the brake assembly. You need to use a flathead screwdriver to turn this little wheel. As the wheel turns, it pushes out the brake shoes closer to the drums, which is what you want. When the settings are correct, you want to feel a very slight drag of the brake drum against the brake shoes.. Once I adjusted both back wheels, my e brake lever doenst have to move up very far at all, and of course, your entire car brakeing performance will be very noticably better. All RS cars have rear drums, but if you have rear disk brakes, then you need to look over those or the e brake lever assembley or cable for looseness..

uh, ok?!?! if its a rear drum assembly then obviously check the rear brake shoes. our cars have auto adjusters so pulling the e-brake every time you park should adjust the tension. adjusting the parking brake cable is not the first thing you go to, its usually a sign of a problem, but NOT the problem. if you have rear disc then check the cable connection at the piston.

for drums put the car in reverse(car off) and pump the e-brake a few times, it should adjust it just right.

haha dude that automatic adjusting crap don't work if the shoes are wearing down then just tighten the cable. I have yet to see some bald brake shoes also.

Yo dino haha that adjusting thing you were talking about wasn't there when I popped the little rubber thing off my rotor, does that mean I put the rotor in the wrong way?

ebrake shoes? for the disc brakes are just normal brake pads...

You can have it cheap, fast or good. Pick any two.

If you want it cheap and fast, it's not going to be good.
If you want it cheap and good, it's not going to be fast.

No dude. The ebrake on a GS with rear discs does not use the disc brake. The disc actually has a little drum around the hub the is exclusively for the ebrake.

..and on all 2GNT rear brake discs i have seen, there is a hole, usually capped off with a rubber plug, that when uncovered exposes an adjustment star for the ebrake's pads. Mine had them on the stock discs, and my slotted and drilled KVR's have them too.
