I have a 1996 Eagle Talon ESI. It is a manual transmission. Occasionally, it slips out of 5th gear. Any suggestions before I take to a transmission shop?

Try changing the fluid to Factory NV-T350 fluid.
not to scare you, but that's usually a really bad sign. As in, start-shopping-for-junkyard-trannies kinda sign.

That's kinda wierd, b/c 5th I believe is on it's own shaft. Do you use 5th gear quite a bit (HWY driving daily)? Yeah Darkone is right, go shopping b/c you have worn dogteeth and they are no longer keeping the gear engaged.

i gots the same problem. but its only at low rpms. if i just push a little bit up on the stick, not too hard, but just enough to keep preasure on it, it stays in. and anyhow, i'm always going down to 4 for hills.
Having Problems? Heres my Three step solution to anything 2gnt related. Step 1: Put down everything in your hands. Step 2: Grab a lucky strike, Smoke it. Step 3: Walk to the fridge, double fist some keystone ice, sit down in the shade, drink one beer, finish cigarette, drink other beer, roll a joint, smoke it, walk back to your problem, and in about 5 minutes the solution will come to you. If not. Go here: here
If still nothing, your trying to hard. Start over at step 1.

That's bad news, imho. Happened to my wife's old ford pos aspire. First 5th went, then 4th, 3rd and so on. Eventually the tranny just froze all together, stuck in 1st gear....

That’s it! It only happens going uphill at lower RPMs, but I never had that problem before. I did a recent mod. I completely removed the stock air-box and replaced it with a K&N cone air filter RU-3130. Coincidence? Or just bad luck?

Fifth gear in NV-T350 is on the same shaft as first and third, the input shaft.
