i have a 96 Eclipse 2.0 AT. The problem is, occasionally while you are driving the car it just stalls for no reason. Sometimes it will start right back up but sometimes it will have to sit for a couple of hours. Then when it starts back up the check engine light comes on. I had a gargage look at it and the mechanic told me the codes he was getting was related to the coilpack. I replaced that and two weeks later the samething is happening. So I got the check engine light codes read again and exact same codes. I find it hard to believe that the coil pack is the problem after replacing it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I hate driving my car wondering where I'm going to get stuck for a couple of hours.

what was the exact code (number wise)
Could be a bad connection to the coil pack, could be a loose wire or something.

Could be your spark plug cables are bad and arching throught the insulation and grounding out.

Could be a bad cam/crank sensor also depending on what code you got

the cam and crank angle are pretty much the two sensors on the car that will leave you dead in the water. if either one of those is loose/bad, the car will die immediatly.

Yeah, Dino is right.....my problem was the crank angle sensor(loose). The dealer thought it was the cam positioning sensor the first time.

Does the engine STALL or SHUT OFF? big difference. Stalling is physically related to the engine, complete shutoff is related to something electrical. I had that exact prob. Id be driving, then car didnt just stall, it SHUT OFF. As in, ALL electricity lost. The engine wasnt dieing, it was shutting off. Well, wasnt hard to figure out. When Id lose power, everything shutoff and Id roll to a stop on the side of the road. Key wouldnt given ANYTHING power. Then, oncve *something* had cooled down and stopped melting, turning the key on would now give power to the accessories and then start the car up like normal.

Turns out I had a bad ECU. SOmething in there, when hot, would melt a wire or wires together, and that would short out the ECU. With no ECU, nothing in the car gets power. Until the wires in the ecu un-melted themselves, as in werent in contact shorting eachother, the car could then get the electricity it needed to start again....

Not sure if this helps, or if your engine is actually stalling out.

i dont see crank angle sensor in the haynes manual. i did find camshaft position sensor but no crank angle sensor.
any ideas?? is it named differently?

Crank angle sensor is between the alternator and oil sending unit. And Mr. D is dead one the money. When my car just shuts off immediately it was because of the cam sensor wire melting through and grounding off against the head.

I'll check all the sensors this weekend and thanks for all the help.
The codes I was getting when the check engine light came on is PO351, PO352 and PO455. If that is any help. And again thank you everyone for your help and input. And there still is power to the car but it just doesn't turn over after it stalls for a couple of hours on occasion but then again sometimes it starts right back up.

Ignition coil. Check the harness connector on it, and if that doesn't work, replace it.
