OK, I have a 95 ESI 5 spd w/ 98,XXX on it. I have had it for about 6 months and have loved it ever since w/no probs. Recentely it has began to get cold(illinois) and I have been hearing a strange sound under my hood. The sound is a high pitched whistle type noise. The sound happens around 2-3000 rpms and get this, it goes away when the engine gets warm. I took it to a dealer and the imbeciles hooked up a stethescope and "concluded" that I might need a new water pump. What is your all take on this? I really want to know before I drop $400 into a water pump. Pleaz and thanx

Are we talking a small whine or a loud squeel? Obviously, if its a loud squeel that sounds like it does sometimes when an air conditioner kicks on then your belt is loose. Not sure if its a small whine.

Heh, I had that, the sound only lasts for 5-15 minutes? And only when it's colder out? Loud, high pitched whistling noise, kinda? For me it was my water pump, p/s, a/c belt tensioner, timing belt, all of the timing belt pulleys and idler arms, and I forgot what else, but what I didn't forget is that it WAS NOT cheap!!!! cost me around $1200. Oh yeah, it sat in the mechanics lot for about 2 weeks because they couldn't figure it out. Mechanics don't know much about the 420A.
