#36838, "CAI + Water + CEL + No Speedo = ???"

today when leaving school, I went over a deep puddle of water that splashed very high. It was deeper than I first thought it was.

When going on the freeway, I sped up and took my car up to 3.5k rpms in 2nd gear. Then all of a sudden my power feels like it hits a wall and just stops at 3.5k rpms. I then shift into third and everything seems fine. Then about 8 seconds later, my speedo and odometer stop working. Then about 20 seconds later, I get a CEL. The first CEL since ive owned the car for 2yrs+.

I then pull over to check the engine and it looks dry. Everything looks fine. When driving off, my speedo works just fine. I still have the CEL on though. Then I park at the gym and when I get out, my speedo doesnt work again. I drive a few miles and the speedo goes back on but then a few miles later it goes off.

what happened to my car? what should i look for? any help is appreciated.

You probably got water in a sensor or harness connector. I bet in a day or two it'll dry off and be fine again.

Hookup a datalogger or do the keydance and see which code got thrown. I'll be home tonite if you wanna borrow one, give me a call.

Also, from faq.dsm.org: (altho this mostly applies to the 4g63)
---------------
Many people who experience problems immediately or shortly after washing their engine have damaged the crankshaft angle sensor on the car. Without this sensor, the ECU cannot tell what position the crankshaft is in, and the engine cannot run.

Usually, people who wash their engine are able to cover the electrical sensors prior to washing. If this is done, the engine will probably start up fine right after washing. However, driving the car with a wet engine will create steam, which can get inside the crankshaft angle sensor housing. Once the car is shut off, the steam condenses into water, which wrecks the sensor.

Some owners are able to 'revive' their sensors, as Brian Powell was able to do here, but most are dead. Some Digesters have investigated if they can be repaired, but so far nobody has been able to do so.

To prevent crank angle sensor damage, either wait until the engine is mostly dry before driving, or drive it for a while and then raise the hood to allow the steam to escape.

Is this an A/T or a M/T? Makes a difference because the speedometer calculations are done differently between the two.

MTX, manual transmission. There is a speed sensor right above where the 2 axles meet. You probably got some water in there. That can cause a CEL and the speedometer to stop working. If your car hit a wall at 3500 RPM, then the MAP sensor wiring is messed. This would also cause it to run rich enough to "hit a wall." Unfortunately, these 2 sensors do not have their wiring converge until near the ECU, so you may have toasted the ECU. Take it out and let it sit near a dry heat source (near a radiator or something like that) to dry out and hope that the problem goes away. Also spray some "wiredry" or something like that all around on the wires. That should take care of any wiring shorts for now.

thanks for the info Bill emoji
however my car is not hitting a "wall" anymore
just for that 2 times after hitting the water.

should i just let it dry out while in the car? (its sunny and hot today) or take it off like you said?
