#36739, "Car dies after braking"

Anyone else have a problem with their car dieing all of sudden after stopping? I just did my oil and plugs change to see if that was the problem, but it wasn't. It also idles funny. Jumps down to 300 then back up to 1100 before going back to 850 quite often.

check your IAC motor, throttle position sensor, and if your battery was disconnected recently, let your car warm up and idle for 10min. if its none of that check your ignition coil, and plug wires.

Check your battery!

It sounds strange, but I've seen this happen on a good number of cars. You come to a stop and the car stalls or the RPMs drop very low then go back up. It's happened to my Saturn too.

My bet is your battery is going bad and is on the verge of giving out.

Check ALL wires in the engine bay for electrical shorts. A wire may be grounding itself on something metal.....

I am going to have to say it is the IAC sensor.,
My car did this, but it would do it for a couple of days, then go away for a month or sometimes a couple of days or weeks.
I changed the TPS ....then it did it again.
Changed the IAC over 9 months ago and it hasn't done it again.

kinda sounds like your torque convertor is staying in lockup, thats if you are driving an automatic. but you say it only happens after heavy braking? or does the car also drive like shit too? check IACV too.

oh and, it can't be the battery. once the car is running the alternator takes over. yes it might cushion the spikes in voltage, but it can't be causing dips in RPM

Is ur speedometer still working? My car died on stopping, but I had no speedometer at all. That was the output speed sensor. IAC or TPS maybe???

Actually slow, you are mistaken.

It can be the battery even if the alternator is working fine.

Trust me, I know, I've seen it happen to four different cars with perfect alternators and dying batteries. It's happened to my own car! Alternator is perfectly fine but the battery was on it's way out and the car had the exact same symptoms. The idle would drop when you came to a stop and put the clutch in, and sometimes it would drop enough to stall the car. Changed the battery, everything ws fine. Checked the output of the alternator myself with a multimeter and it was working normally, so it wasn't the alternator.

The battery is still part of the electrical system, and when it is going bad it's different resistance (and who knows what else) causes the whole electrical system to go screwy and can cause the car to stall.

I don't have an exact explanation, but I think I know what I'm talking about. Like I said I've seen it happen to 4 different cars. A bad battery can cause idle problems when you come to a stop.

if it was a short then there would be a blown fuse.
unless its the ignition cables to head/block, but then that's be a misfire and the car run like shit... if at all.

Can't be the battery because it's new and the new alternator was just put on last weekend. Car does sound like it's misfiring a couple of times, so I think all of you are right. It could be my AIC.

I have the same problem, sort of. It could be what the rest of these guys are saying, the batt or alternater. But I think it might be cuz of the turbo, having the turbo and the pistons and all of the other upgrades u no doubt of lowered your idle. I have a 96 gs-t and if i'm riding at 5.5 or 6m rpms then i throw it into nutral it will stall. Its cuz from going to 6 it drops to idle which should be around 750(at least in my car) but my idle is so low cuz of all of my upgrades (keep in mind, i have a 11 second eclipse). So i'm thinking that it is that u throw it into nutral then break when u slow down. U cant do that, try to slow down with your gears, doing that will gradually slow u down......hope this helps.....hit me up if u need some help..1

As Todd recommended, you can check the voltage of your battery first. If it checks out ok, the culprit should be your IAC (which is attached to your throttle body). Many IAC motors on different cars have the same problems. The most notable problem have been on the 92+ Toyota Camry's. Simply take off your throttle body and remove the IAC motor. You can check the voltage of it. After doing so, you can either clean it with gasoline or carb cleaner or buy a whoel new IAC. Good luck.
