Is it true that 2g Eclipses have a very high risk of the engine catching on fire? My friend at school is a mechanic and says that it happens to a lot of eclipses on a regular basis and that is why he would never own one. Is this true? I told him that I do not hear much about engine fires and I know quite a bit of Eclipse owners (you guys). He said that a lot of the Eclipses that go into his shop are because of an engine fire and the reason is that there are so many electronics.

He then asked me if my engine had ever caught fire... Is there something i dont know about Eclipse engines or is this guy full of crap?

I haven't heard of any that have. but it could be just a rumor/fear because they have those 'fire blankets' under the hood. so people assume that they NEED them or something.. hehe.

ive heard of a couple people having the alt to battery wire rub on somthing and short out, but ive never heard of a fire (it usually just melts the plastic connector area off).

i also cant see why our cars would have any higher risk of fire than others, i seriously doubt we have more "electronics" in our engine than any other production car. even if we did, almost everything is fused, so the risk of blowing fuses should go up, not the risk of fire. its possible that because theres so many people that mod these cars, this increases the chance of accident (adding a system and not fusing, etc.), but if thats the case the highway should be littered with burnt out civics.

:shhh: i do cocaine :/shhh:

There's an isssue with some of the 1g's where a wire harness gets hot and could catch fire under the hood. There's a thread on DSMtalk about it, but I wouldn't say there's enough information to call it big problem. Yet. I've never heard of a 2g, nt or otherwise catching on fire spontaneously.

Some of the 4G63 guys (especially the 1G) have problems with the dipstick popping out at high velocity. This is why you sometimes see a 1G with a second power bulge emoji . This can happen when the O-ring on the dipstick wears out and doesn't grip the tube like it should. A lot of guys wire their dipstick in place to avoid this potential problem. When the dipstick pops out, oil follows. The problem is that oil on the hot manifold can catch fire. I wouldn't say that I have heard an inordinate number of engine fire stories...

I'm defintely one of those guys with the alt to battery connection melting off. Yet I still can't find the source of the problem and constantly put on a new gheeto rigged wire every month.

someone on here I think had a 1g and the dipstick popped out and oil hit the manifold and caught fire or something. I think it blackked a spot on the hood. May have been another board. Thought it was here tho. Sorry if it embarasses anyone for some reason. (just lay low if it does) emoji

This is Cyan's eclipse too. But don't worry, he left an oil-soaked rag on the exhaust manifold... so yeah...

this is the exact thing i told him too, about our cars not having more electronics than most others. He is one of those guys that is just set on American cars and Imports suck. The funny thing is he drives an old beat up Geo Metro emoji.

haha, its funny.. his metro has 3cyl and he says he spanks eclipse's and hondas all the time. He says it with a serious look on his face and does not appear to be kidding. Yet his metro is stock. My friend had a metro a work beater and said it was so slow.

Can metros spank a 2gnt with I/E?

What school do you go to? If you are talking about the machanic over at RCC, i can't believe that guy is still talking crap.. Blue hatchback metro early 90's, or was it white? Well i can't remember the color atm. But 3 years ago when I used to go there, this machanic teacher guy or whatever he was, used to talk all kindsa crap on my 88 blazer cause it was lowered... At one point in time I had a t3/t4 turbo on it, and for a while i had a blower... But boy did he talk crap.
To answer you final question Weezle... you have to think... Do you think anyone has "Raced" a metro? If you saw a metro pull up next to you, would you think that you were racing him? would you even entertain the guy who was behind the wheel? Those kinds of guys are there for our entertainment, not vis-versa (if it is the white-trash guy I am thinking of), They drive me nuts talking like they were born holding a wrench in there hand!! jeeze! Oh to complete a thought from earlier in the paragraph: He may have thought that he was racing the hondas or clipses, but they probibly didn't know it.

haha danny. I dont know, maybe it is the same guy. But i dont go to RCC, I go to school in San Bernardino. Maybe the guy was taking mechanic courses at RCC.

I will ask him. The reason I think it might be him is
(A)It is a blue metro (along with red and white fenders now)
(B)He thinks he is Gods gift to cars.

Oh wait! I just reread your post and realized you were talking about an instructor! This guy is a student. I will take pics of the car on friday so you can see this hideous vehicle.

Oh yeah and he has a ghey sticker that says "We are the people your parents warned you about"
