#36494, "Embarassing Question"

Hey guys, um my 98 Eclipse RS was out in the cold tonight and when I left my friend's house I fired her up to get it warm. As it was warming up the engine went from its 900-1100 normal idle up to 2000. Then it would come back down and after a few seconds it would rev back up then slowly fall. Is this normal? I have a 3" catback if that makes any difference. I'm putting my turbo on in December and I want to know if this is a problem with the motor.

No it's not normal. Maybe it's your IAC. I've heard that it can cause high idle. I would say huge vac leak but not since it idles back down.

Idle Air Controller. It's the thing on the throttle body that has a harness plug on it. The bottom one. The top is the TPS.

I bought an extended warranty from the place I got it from. If this is a problem do you think they would honor it even though my only mod is a cat back? If not how much do you think it will cost?

Also I've been hearing some ticking from the engine bay every now and then followed with a rasp. What do you think that would be?

Just don't tell them about the catback. Maybe they won't notice. But the sensor is probably $60-$80 for a new one. No idea about the engine noise. Could be anything. Try using a mechanic stethescope and see where it's coming from.

I hope the noise is not a spun bearing or anything too bad. I've taken it to Mitsu before and they said they couldn't find anything wrong with it and didn't really hear the ticking too much. As far as not telling them about the catback, its the Thermal 3" with a 5" tip. Kind of hard to miss =) Hey I appreciate your help dude.

Well, you could inform them that an exhaust has absolutely nothing to do with the IAC. There is no way that the exhaust system could have hindered the performance of the IAC. Also, the ticking/rasp sound you could be hearing may be your PCV valve. Mine makes some strange noises sometimes too. See if you can get it to make that noise with your ear right next to the PCV valve. If that's it, then nothing to worry about.

You jinxed me, now the other day my engine revved to like 3 grand and stayed there, wouldnt come back down, so i think it was a big vac leak, but it wasnt, i unplugged the TPS and it idled back down, i plugged it back in and it just sat there and idled fine, didnt do it the rest of the day either so that was pretty jacked up, I dont know how the TPS being unplugged would effect anything?

What he is experiencing has happened to MANY eclipses/avengers, its some stupid thing that no one knows why or how to fix it, it usually happens when the car is cold and when you first start out in the morning

I have had the problem numerous times last year but havent had it happen so far this year

Basically you turn the car on in the cold and I start to drive and I hit the first stop sign and the car idles up to 2 grand then back down then back up then back down and after about 20 times of the up and down it stops and wont happen again that day, I have had that problem on a sunfire and it turned out to be a cracked insulator on the spark plug, but Ive checked my plugs numerous times and no problems with the plugs, the same question has been asked 1000 times on the ASOG board and NO ONE knows why

My friend had it on her 91 TSI AWD....apparently alot of the early 1G's have it too - its called idle surge. They got a ton of things to try and fix it, I don't know if they will work on our car though. She ended up fixing hers by getting a new thermostat.

first things first - clean your throttle body and make sure there is no slack in your throttle cable

It has done it to me before, but usually if i rev to ~ redline it'll fall back down... but the other day revving didnt help. I wish someone would figure that sheit out cause its annoying... i'd like my car to be as well manored as allowed... if I dont find any more info out soon, and i have this problem more intermitten than i'd like to deal with, i might just run a switch for the TPS wires if it continues to fix it when the idle problem occurs. Think that'd be bad on the ECU loosing TPS for a sec?

Well my TPS wires were shorting out against my hood causing the voltage to be 0(momentarily) and the tranny (auto) went into limp mode right away and the CEL came on for a bad TPS, but it would be fine after the voltage was present again

as for taking it to the dealer, they shouldn't care. I take mine for the warantee covered problems and they haven't mentioned a thing, but it porbably depends on the exact place. Some can be dicks.

This might be stupid, but couldnt it be just because his heater is kicking on then it settles back to normal... I mean it seems likely to me... Maybe also you are letting it warm to much up and the fan is kicking on too...that ups idle...Not as much as yours is ...but Im just saying, could it be his heater?

When my cam angle sensor was going bad it did this exact same thing. It was an intermittent problem that only seemed to show up when it was started and driven the first time that day.

The dealership called in technicians from corporate(4 times I had it in shop) and they finally found the cam angle sensor was bad or going bad. They change this back in the spring of 1997 and I have not had the problem since.

My idle used to jump to 2300 and then to 1100 and then back up. It did it at stop lights or anytime I stopped the car for the first 15 minutes of driving.

I think the cam angle sensor is the one on the side of the valve cover. There is a plug with wires coming off of it.

I posted this 4 years ago when I was on this board. People were having problems back then.

I think if it is not the IAC, then it might be this sensor that is the problem.
