Who is currently running one of the Howell Shortblocks? I'm probably going to order the 2.2L Friday when I get my paycheck. I'm just curious if anyone has had any problems...

TIA

hmm if i remember correctly... someone got a block from howell and had some problems with it... but i havent really seen the block its self yet.. if you ask me, its not worth the extra money... just my opinion for 2200 thats as much as a turbo kit and then you have to take the block apart you can spend the extra money in your turbo parts and get more HP from that

Yup. You really wont see much better HP from the 2.2. A little , yes, but just up the boost on the 2.0 to make up for it. I went through the whole ordeal with Matt's block, as i helped with the whole project. I'll tell you this. I'm building my own block. You want something done right, do it your damn self!. Period.

To make an extremely long story short, (email me for the long story) it arrives in 6.5 weeks instead of the advertiesed 3-4 weeks, they ship it with a fresh coat of paint over the rust layer, the holes for over half of the bolts that you need to use are completely rusted out, so they need to be enlarged and tapped. The freeze plug in the oil galley behind the crank gear leaked bad (requires timing belt removal and installation), the freeze plug in the oil galley behind the clutch/flywheel leaked bad (requires that you pull the tranny off to get at). It took a month to install instead of a day like gary advertises. I was offered $25 in compensation from howell for this and was treated rude on the phone every time I called (including when I ordered it...). That thing is a hunk of crap for the money you spend on it and I will NEVER do business with Howell Automotive ever again.

some good shops to think about from what i ehar are phatridz.com they can and will build u the most evil car u want, black dog motorsports they do neon stuff but it is the same exact block

both of those companies are good on prices and are cool people and deinatly build fast cars...

You can have it cheap, fast or good. Pick any two.

If you want it cheap and fast, it's not going to be good.
If you want it cheap and good, it's not going to be fast.

Damn man you make me wish I had ordered my turbo kit from hahn instead of howell. Well it's been a month and 2 weeks maybe 3 and still haven't got it in yet. I'm starting to wonder if he just took my money.... I was also thinking about ordering a 2.2 block from them after christmas but from what I've seen I think it would be best to just build a block yourself it may end up being 5x's better plus you learn more as you go....

if you want to hear both sides of the story search for it. Gary explained himself very well on that post. he said that they get the blocks from a junkyard so yeah there probably will be rust. and it's not hard to tap a rusted hole if you do it right. i'm not trying to get in the middle of all of this but i dont' want howell to lose business and trust in us just because a few people think badly of them. it is stated that there is no warranty on race products because they will be abused, but Gary said that if when he saw the problems he would have called him right then instead of waiting a week or so later. not trying to start an argument again. just thought that phrenzy and the others would like to know both sides and not buy something that THEY may not regret. personaly, i will do business with howell. they have been around and have proven themselves if you ask me. also, they are one of the few companies who actually support us instead of all the honda/acura guys. i'll try to find the post if i can to help you out. hope that helped

EDIT: - the dang search never works for me. maybe somebody else can find it..or if your that curious email Gary. another thing he said he could tap every hole for an extra 50 bucks i believe.

EDIT (again): - i found a few but don't think this is all. howell talked a lot more in another one.

I appreciate everyone's opinion's very much, and I thank you guys for taking the time to post. I am going to give Howell a chance, because Dino tells me that Gary can build me the best engine. And as far as I'm concerned, Dino is the 2GNT god so there ya go. Dino has spent several hours on the phone explaining things to me, and therefore I trust he has my best interest in mind.

I really don't mind waiting 6-8 weeks, as long as the bastard screams when it's in. emoji

I would agree that they probably do really good work on the internals, and I have faith that the motor will last a long time now that I got it running properly. The main reason I am so frustrated is because the whole reason I bought that block was to save downtime. I wanted to change the engine out in a weekend since my car is my daily driver. I don't blame Gary for the mistake that I made with the rusted holes, but if his block were truely a "plug and play" block like he advertises (see http://www.hort.purdue.edu/newcrop/proceedings1990/v1-324.html 3rd post from the bottom), then there would not be rusted holes on that block in the 1st place. The freeze plugs leaking were what I was most upset about though since they caused me another 2 weeks without a car. I had to miss work several times because I couldn't get there and wound up having to pay a shop to fix the leak on the t-belt side because school started and I had to have a car and I had no time to work on it anymore.

Despite my frustration, I would have been satisfied if Gary took SOME responsibility for all of this, but he puts it ALL on me. I had to pay the shop over $500 to get the leak fixed and I missed work etc etc... I would have been happy if he offered to split that labor cost with me, but instead he offers me $25 and is rude to me on the phone. I am not here to tell you that if you buy a crate motor from Howell that it will not run properly because I'm sure the internals are of good quality (thats why I bought mine). I am here to tell you that if something goes wrong, don't expect any effort on their part to make you a happy customer. I wouldn't make a habbit to do business with someone that believes that they can do no wrong and accepts no responsibility for their faults. This is true no matter how high quality their product is.
