Of course I'm going to ask if you have any CEL's but my first guess would be to look over my plugs and wires. You might have a faulty plug that is not playing nice under a load.

I did check my plugs and wires. My wires are about a month old, and plugs are set at the right gap. I don't know about the O2 sensor, I guess I'll try that next. Is that a common problem that the O2 sensor messing up???

you're getting that cool...plop!plop! noise? it happened to me and it's cool to see the fire shoot out my exhaust, that's just you're O2 sensor reading too rich fuel for some reason. i had that problem due to the o2 sensor wire being exposed a bit, it got wet, and my sensor reading was sky high in the 4.000. i was like damn. i step on the gas and i was getting mad backfire, like the way motorcycles get. people were like freaking out seeing the little fire coming out of my exhaust.

Man I couldn't afford the damn O2 sensor, so i started thinking about the first time it backfired couple of months ago. Back then, all i had to do was to change out the plug wires. I just got some new ones about two months ago so i didn't think they could be the reason. But i changed them out anyway. Guess what, it fixed it! It was simple as that! But, do plug wires get damaged this easily???

if the o2 sensor is ok, check the reading. then if its still ok, go back and check the resistence of the spark wires, then make sure the plugs are still ok. then the coil etc... cool

You might just wanna go out and buy some cheap ass plugs that are pre-gapped so you know that you didn't gap them wrong for sure. I bought a set of NGKs and gapped them correctly (or so I thought) and my car idled and ran like crap. It also stumbled under anything more than 1/2 throttle. So, on a hunch, I went out and bought Bosch platinum +4s. Problem solved. The cheapest plugs for my sister's neon were $8 for all four. Car runs fine. It's worth a shot.
