#35697, "Clicking-Tapping-Grinding sound.. possible water pump!"

ok well about a week ago i noticed this strange sound eminating from my car.. found it coming from the passenger side.. poped the hood and kinda sounded like a bearing was going somwhere.. i got it looked at and we came to the conclusion it was the accesory belt tensioner.. well i managed to fix that, and well sounds still remained.. i had not had a chance to run the car without that belt to determine if it could be the power steering or the a/c but i looked around on here and found this post..

http://forums.2gnt.com/cgi-bin/dcforum/dcboard.cgi?az=read_count&om=1064&forum=DCForumID13

im guessing it could be the water pump.. and im hoping its just that.. im hoping to rip it apart soon, possibly this weekend. and replace the pump. i suppose i just wanted to get some further insight from anyone with any other ideas..

heres the thing.. the water pump and everything was replaced when i did my timing belt at about ~71k miles and my car is now at ~81k. the water pump is not from the dealership but is brand new from O'Reily with a lifetime warrenty, but find it odd that it could go out so soon. and i highly doubt it could be the other idler or tensioner pulley on the timing belt. i dont know how bad it is or if the water pump is leaking.. my temp gauge is not going above normal in the car and the car seems to be performing just the same... as far as i can tell.

neways.. lets see what you think.

Did you replace the timing belt tensioner pulley, and idler pulley? Could be those. Could also be your alternator. I know they make all kinds of sounds when their bearings go out. Take off the accessory belt, and the alternator belt first, then run the engine. See if the noise is still there. IF it is, then suspect the timing belt area. That is easy enough to do, so try that first. You can also get a piece of tubing, like 1" clear tubing, and put one end to your ear, and the other to sweep the whole area trying to hone in exactly where the noise is coming from. Kinda works like a stethescope.

That sounds exactly like the sound my car makes when the accessory belt is loose. Are you sure it's tight enough?
