#34529, "ahh my PS belt sucks! help"

I posted a week ago my belt PS belt went so I replaced it and had a oil change place(jiffy lube) put it in for free. well the guy told me he adjusted my tensioner as far as he could so that was as tight as he could get it. Its not tight enough so what can I do? What if I got a better, different or smaller belt? the belt it loud as hell now for a week not while driving but when turning. PS fluid is fine. I cant deal with it anymore. Should I try messing with the tensioner? Any advise would be great.

I got a belt that was an inch smaller than what comes w/ the underdrive pulley. it was a bitch to get on, but the squeeling is gone.

Yeah, you might want to double check and make sure the belt size is correct. They make 2 for our car, with and without a/c.

Also, if you loosten the 2 bolts on the power steering assembly, you can pull the whole assembly out and that will tighten up the belt too. You have to have the PS pulley lined up just right because the wrench has to go through the pulley to get to the bolts. Then just wedge a breaker bar or big wrench in there and pull the PS assembly towards you and re-tighten the bolts.

There is no need to do that.

These cars have an adjustable tensioner pulley assembly for the accessory belt. Loosen the tensioner pulley from the bracket (14mm), adjust the tensioner pulley forward (14mm square bolt). Loosen the PS pump and swing it back. Put your belt on, swing the PS pump forward again to take up the slack, then use the tensioner pulley to tension the belt. You can't get enough tension on the belt just using the PS pump, and if you pry on it you'll probably end up bending your PS pulley off center and you'll never be able to keep belts on it.

when you say the PS "pump" what are you referring to?? first time having to deal with a belt so be nice emoji I can see the tensioner but where you add the ps fluid is that the pump or just a reservoir?

TIA

when u look at the ps pump (standing in front of your car/engine bay) u will see where it is mounted up real close to the exhaust manifold..

to loosen it, u have to line up the pulley so u can get access to the bolts that are on the pass side of the unit...(have to use the openings that are in the center of the pulley to get to the bolts) if they arent lined up, turn the engine over, and it will rotate the pulley (dont start the car, just turn over)... loosen those two bolts. there is another bolt, on the dr. side of the p/s unit, that u will have to get to w/lotsa extensions...its in the center of the pulley... then jimmy a wrench between the mounting unit and the head/block, and wedge it so that u are putting tension on the belt... tighten those two bolts up (keeping the tension so that what u just did was useful, and then tighten the third...

then tighten up the tensioner pulley to your desired belt tension..

good luck
