#3429, "cyclone engines/2.4 420a ????"

I just want to get this straight, are these the 2 engines that can be swapped into are car? If so do they add more power compared to the 420a stock? I was totally unaware of this and I read the previous posts but would like more information about these engines or any other potential engines that will work.

thanks all

none, its just that I read in one of previous posts that there is a 420a 2.4 liter that can be swapped with our car and wanted if that would throw more hp than our 2.0 420a?
And what is a cyclone engine? Never heard of it. I know I am annoying but how else is one suppose to learn about these things?

thanks all

As far as i know, anybody help me out, the 2.4L is the engine in the spyder and from what i gather there isnt much in the way of mods. Again correct me if i'm wrong anybody. As far as the cyclone goe, not exactly sure, but i think its a turbo engine, but not sure.

Cyclone is the 1st generation japan-spec turbo motor. This motor has slightly more horsepower and does not suffer from crankwalk.

I've heard that the 2.4L spyder engine is shit. Is this true?

Yes the cyclone is the jap-spec 4g63 tuned or something. You can't swap that in. It'd be like swapping in a 4g63 which is possible but only with a crap load of time money and research.

The 2.4L sypder engine is the same thing. It's a 4g64 mitus motor that is completely different from the 420a. There is 2.4L 420a that's in an avenger or seabring(i think) that you could possibly try to swap in but I'm not sure. I know there were issues that arose when skrilla though about doing it. You'll have to search the forum for that.

...but I bought mine from outta a '97 Stratus. The 4G64 is SOHC and the 420a 2.4L is DOHC and provides 150HP and 167lb-ft or torque. The Mitsu 2.4L I think is dirt is makes ~142HP and more torque than the 420a but not at all better than the 2.4L 420a, which is also new '96 I believe. Anyway it came out sometime after the 420a in '95 so they can't be more than 5 years young compared to the ~20 year old 4G blocks.

Did you go ahead and buy all the stuff needed to do the swap of the 2.4L? If you are doing the swap, I want to see pics and see some dyno info on it. Quick question for you Skrilla, What is the highest compression we can run on stock internals? How do stock re-ground cam shafts compare to billet cams, and do stock cams wear down if they have a lot of miles on them? Thanks a lot Skrilla.

The only problems with the 2.4L on a 2GNT is tranny fitment, mounting it in the engine bay and the balance shafts. The engine can actually rev to 7500rpms but the shafts must be removed. Stock it redlines at 6200 with a 6450 fuel cut so hooking up our PCM could lead to instant disaster with a 7300rpm fuel cut and 4/10's less engine, so you would also need a fuel controller. Our cylinder head does fit the 2.4L block but because it's using a different power configuration and high revving natured head the engine wouldn't make 167lb-ft of torque. Everything else would perfectly bolt up to the engine though, like the manifolds filter TB, so you COULD use all the same mods for it. The engine is just a hair over 1" taller, but I think this could work. Anyway using our head the 2.4L would probably make ~170HP and 155lbs of tq. The low end torque would be traded off for some higher rpm HP with the way the 2GNT PCM, manifolds and cylinder head perform. That would be very nice and even keep up with the Neon crowd with our R/T neon specific gear ratios and cylinder head. This is just 1 route though

The 2.4L that will swap in is the 2.4L from the stratus/cirrus/breeze.

Of course.. like the neon, the head is on backwards.. but.. just use our head on the 2.4L block.. anyone that has had their car apart for a timing belt change will have probably noticed one side of the timing belt pullies are marked 2.4L while the other side are marked 2.4L.. the crank on the 2.4L sticks out a bit further.. it also has balance shafts (which can be removed).

Neon guys are doin the swap now.. a NA neon with a 2.4L short block will run 13's... don't htink anyone has a 2.4L short block in a talon/eclipse/sebring/avenger yet..

I don't know all the details yet, but AFAIK you need to use a different cam sensor.. the neon guys do anyhow.. the 96 cam sensor was different somehow.

I'm probably gonna get around to this swap sometime soon. I know of atleast one person who has contacted forward motion about using this on their next turbo build (to remain namelesss unless he wants to talk about it)

I know that if i find a 2.4L short block for cheap.. i'll be snaggin it and making it work. Extra 40 ft-lbs of NA torque.. thank you.. now stir and slowly remove metal to 2.5L. Add pistons, rods.. spice to taste with some 440cc injectors and fluff with approx 20lbs of boost emoji Serves all..

the cyclone is mounted the SAME way as ours with the blets and pulleys on the same side. i'm surprised Raizin didn't correct that statement. peeps sportin the 420a's over in cali have been doing the 420a to cyclone swap for sometime according to him.

...because it's the Evo engine that sits the same way as our engine NOT the Cyclone engine. The Cyclone IS the 1G block and head and does sit the same way as the rest of the american market 4g63-T engines.
