#34222, "question for DINO but if anyone else knows please respond."

ok i have a 95 GS and i put a different ECU on that was for a 95 GS and i can't back out the bolt cause my friend tightend it in there way too tight so now i guess it stripped in there. cause don't they have to be tightened to a certain tourqe or something? my CEL is on and i'm pretty sure it's giving me the code that i need a new ECU. so is there anway i can chop off the wiring harness and buy a new one from Satan or somwhere? and put my old ECU back on? TIA

ya dont' want to axe off the wiring harness.. it's like a 500 dollar or more part to replace, and I sure wouldn't want to reinstall one those things. the other guys will have to help ya more on the other more important questions. emoji

I stripped my ECU bolt in to the ECU. What I had todo is completely tear the thing apart,i mean all the way apart, and hack off plastic inside the ECU to get to the place wear the bolt threads in, then i had to get a pair of vise grips and get a MEGA grip on the thing, then i could unbolt the wire harness retaining bolt. It was a BIG, huge pain in the ass, and if your friend did it you should kick the shit outta him. It completely destroys the ECU getting to the bolt, and the ECU was like 250 bux.

You're screwed.

What makes you think the ECU is bad? Does the car run? If the car runs, the ecu probably isn't bad.

So you have a CEL. Have you done the keydance to check the codes?

all 95-97 can do the keydance.

I'd hook that up to a codereader to verify that CEL code before i'd just go throw another ECU in it. Those things aren't cheap.

As far as getting your out.. start breaking shit.

ok i called satan today and it's 544 for a new harness and 1000 for installation!!!! so exactly how do you take apart the ecu there are like 4 hex or allen wrench looking bolts on the bottom black part. do i take those out or what? if i can fix myself i will but if i can't i'm gonna sell my car anyway next year and get a 97-99 gst or gsx and i'll let someone else deal with it.

Err, why don't you drill off the head of the screw? That's all that's got to be holding the harness down. Also, PCMs aren't that expensive if you look hard enough. I've bought 2 in the past year and I spent $150 for BOTH of them. Try www.car-parts.com

Yeah, i'd say that's the best solution. Just drill the head off the bolt.

Why do the simple things always ellude me...?

You should be able to buy a tap and die set (I think that's what it's called) at your local auto parts store for about $15-20. Basically, it comes with a tap to drill the center of the broken bolt, then you use another type of tip to turn out that bolt.
