#33837, "EVAP CEL"

Okay people where is the EVAP system located? I keep getting the EVAP CEL everytime after I refill the gas tank.

These are the measures that I have taken to try and stop the CEL from coming on.

1. I dont fill her up past the first "click" at the gas pump.

2. Whenever I close the gas lid I make sure that it clicks several times.

3. I do not fill her up while she is running.

What else can cause this problem? I just need to know where on the car the EVAP system is so I can go over it and check for damaged items or a leak or something. Any of you guys have experience with this?

Thanks for any help.

Althogh i am turboed, i get the EVAP code too, not sure if its the same one as you are getting. My code is that it sees a gross leak somewhere in the system. All my lines are good, and nothing is loose. I have *heard* that there is a "rollover" valve on the top of the gastank that can go bad. If it does go bad, then the gas tank cant keep pressure in it, tripping a CEL code. If when you take off your gas cap, and it doesnt hiss any pressure out, then that may be the problem. Also as stated, check all vac lines and everything else in the EVAP system.

so if that roll over thing is bad, what needs fixin? doesn't sound too good if that evap code is going make me drop the gas tank to fix the problem. cuz what you said about not hearing any pst sound when you open up the gas tank is something I haven't heard in a long time.

Okay I have never heard a hissing sound when I take the my gas cap off. I've had the car two years, and the CEL just started to come on. I'm still not sure where this is. Does anybody have a picture of an engine bay that can point out where the EVAP thing is located?

I've posted on this before, and I have the same problem, code 31 and no psst when opening the cap. When I had the recall on the lower control arm (last year) fixed, I had satan scan my CEL and they said it was the rollover valve, and they wanted about 275 to fix it. I left laughing and a week later the CEL went away for about 2 months, then randomly code 12 and 31 popped back up.
So anyway, still haven't had it fixed, still not 100% sure it would fix it... dunno.

heh... i get the same code all the time. i've never heard the "pssht" noise whenever i've opened my gas tank - i've had my car for a little over a year now, it's been doing it since almost the first day i got the car. it's got about 130k miles on it (about 6k on a factory rebuilt engine, long story why i couldn't build it up). so i'll drive around for a while (maybe a few days or somehting, maybe a month) and randomally it will come on so i do the key dance and it always says 31, so i say "stupid CEL, it annoys me" and go ahead and reset the ECU. pretty simple. satan said that they wanted to do a "smoke test" (who knows how much that would have cost) or something to find the "leak" but i was like "ha, that's crap." guess it's a silly thing that i need to live with.

Just look at the throttle body. There will be a right angle vac line right ontop of it, right above the throttle plate area, where the inlet is. This right angle vac line connects to a hard vac line, and goes along the firewall, then along the frame rail, right in front of the timing belt area, then down into the passenger side fender area. Just follow the lines, you will find it. Take a quick peek up under the passenger side fender, right up in the bumper, you will see the EVAP soleniod, lines, ect..

The Evap system is basically in the same location as the filter on your AEM CAI except that it is on the passenger side. It mainly keeps fuel fumes from escaping into the atmosphere and doesn't seem to have anything to do with performance. If you have access to a chilton's guide they have a section concerning it w/ pictures.
