#3344, "Porting Exhaust manifold"

Hey I am gonna take off my headers to paint em. And since they were gonna be off, you think I could port the exhaust manifold myself? I have a little black/deckers sanding device thats really tiny and powerful...But if I try it with that, how much should I port it...if i even can?

You are talking about the stock exhaust manifold right? You could do a little porting and gasket match them to the hea dif you wanted, but I think it would be far more worth while to install a header. BUt if you want to port the stock exhaust manifold out you can, you'll need a flex extension for your dremel so you can work your way down the runners.

BTW the way our stock exhaust maniold isn't a header. Headers have equal legnth runners so that the exhaust pulses from combustion run through the exhaust without running into each other, and creating turbulance in the exhaust that robs power.

I have pacesetter headers, but I havent looked yet, but does the Holes in the headers match the hole (width, size) of the manifold? Can I open the holes more on the manifold at all? Since the stock(old header or whatever it is called) Is almost like and ovalish rectangle opening, wouldnt that mean it is matched on the manifold...so it should be the same, so that means I should have some porting room to match the holes on my new headers(pacesetter).

The stock manifold is pretty beafy and has a lot of material. The Header is tubulay and really doesn't have the extra material to spare. When you pull it off you'll see what I mean. I wouldn't go thinning out the header any, I don't see it being safe. Could break or crack under the stress down the road.

I wont be porting the Headers at all. But when I take them off the four holes that are on the exhaust manifold----thats what i wanna port.

I just wanna know how much of it i can actually port, if any. I know i would have to modify the gasket as well.

Okay, I think you mean port the head. If so yes you can clean up the exhaust ports on the head to match the gasket. You may want to spend the $40 and get the port and polish bit set from Summit and then you can clear material and smooth the outlet. For tips on the best way to do this Skrilla can help you. He's ported and polishes a few intake manifolds, and he's doing mine now. So for technique he should be able to help along with others on the board who have done their own porting.
