#3323, "No A/C= ?hp"

LAST EDITED ON 13-Jun-01 AT 05:21 PM (PST)

I was wondering, since I NEVER use the A/C, can I use a smaller belt and bypass the A/C compressor?

A few questions though:

1- Is this possible?
2- How much more power would I feel, would it be worth it?
3- Will the compressor go bad/lock up over time if it is never spinning? (in case I ever want to sell the car and need to reconnect the belt)
4- Is the A/C belt a completly seperate belt, directly driven off the crank? Or is some other accessory also run off the same belt?
5- If it's the only accessory run off that belt, then I can just cut it right?
6- If I need a smaller belt, what belt do I need? (part number)

I'm seriously considering this, in fact I think a while back someone posted that they put the belts back on their A/C and powersteering and noticed a major drop in power.

HOOK IT UP!!!

Thats what windows are for........ AC=loss in power...
yeah I may be In Iowa but it gets humid as hell also.. I never run my AC... You can feel the loss in power just drive with it off then crank it on and you can hear the engine bog down....I would do this mod if it works... I wish my car didnt have it....

I can't answer all the Qs.. but I will try....

Yes removing the AC will lessen the "drag" on the pulley. It will help. However, the Power steering AND the AC share the same belt... if you do remove the AC, you might as well go all the way and physically take it out of the car for weight reduction.

How much will the "no AC" mod help? well I estimate about as much horsepower increase as a AFX pulley... no more than that...
now if it's worth it to ya (extreme NA racer.. then I guess its a good idea.. otherwise (personally) I wouldn't do it. Of course this is coming from a person who has no windshield wiper fluid & container emoji Took it out once, never needed it so it's still out!

I have the AFX pulley and bypassed my AC for right now using a smaller belt. I really didnt noticed a gain but maybe it's because the AFX pulley is good to begin with.

I know you can get belts for cars with or w/o AC. Pretty sure if you yank it out there is a part # somewhere for the bypass pulley. Anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. Sure somebody out there knows the part # if it does exist. If I was home right now I could find out soon. If it can wait until the end of the month then I can find out then.....

MIght as well take the thing out. It pretty much dosen't do much when its connected until it turn on that is. It's summer now so I wouldn't do it. I'm using it as a switch for the AC fan to cool down my turbine, so there's one use for having AC. Then again just installing a switch that gives it power is also good.

AC doesn't really hurt till u turn it on. I don't think it would help much. It isn't too heavy. Besides, u payed extra to have ac. Why take it out now? I noticed something funny. I don't havecruise control, but when the ac is on, my car ats kinda like it does. Itjust sails and wants to go or something.
