I need to replace my tranny because I was told it is gonna be cheaper to replace it with a used one rather than doing a rebuild. They said the rebuild will run anywhere from $1,300 to $1,500 roughly. So I need to know what trannys I can use to replace mine. I have a 97 GS. I'm not familar with our trannys and what years you can replace with what. Any help would be appriciated. tia

I just had mine replaced with one from a 2000 Avenger. It had 21,000 miles on it & it was about $600. So far im happy with the results. Plus i still have my warrenty.

Don't pay more than $400 for one

Just think of it as half of an Eclipse with more power emoji

You can use a tranny from a 95-99 eclipse, 95-00 neon, sohc has a little different gears, or dohc has the same gears, avengers, and talons... neon's are the cheapest cause there are a billion of them on the roads and in the grave yards.

Hey Super20G

When you say you can use a Neon tranny (95-00), you mentioned differences in the gearing for SOHC and DOHC. Does that mean the gear ratios are different for the SOHC? Are they better for acceleration or top speed?

Even though the gearing is different on the SOHC and DOHC trannies, I am assuming BOTH will fit with no prblems or special fabrications. Am I right? Thanks.

n e one correct me if im wrong but, the ratios are different(not by much), and it will help you acceleration not top speed.

94-99 Neons BTW

We have the 3.92 Final Drive and a .81 5th gear, Some Neons had this but some had 3.55 Final Drive which some turbo guys like using for better traction out of the hole and a higher top speed along with the .72 5th gear that some of the neons had. I can't remember which neon has which tranny but you can find it on Neons.org
