My speedo, odometer & trip odometer stopped working last night. The weird part is that the Tach, temp & fuel gauges still work. Any ideas on the cause??

I'd wager your speed sensor on your transmission when dead.

I looked at a parts website & found the Vehicle Speed sensor? Is that it? Also I called a speedo shop & they think its the instrement cluster gone bad. Of course thats a $248 part where as the speed sensor is $47.99 from a parts store so I think he is pulling my leg. This is really bugging me. :'( :'(

BTW: Where is the harness for that thing to see if it came unplugged.

You will only go into limp in mode if you're an AT. Since you didn't mention any of those symptoms I'm assuming you're MT. I wouldn't believe the speed shop saying its the instrument cluster. It's MOST definitely the speed sensor. There is a few things that you can do to check this. One check the power wire to the speed sensor (yellow one). Should read 5V. Check to see you are recieving signal from the speed sensor. See if the frequency is changing on the yellow-wire on the bottom ECU harness. If either of those don't work then it's the speed sensor. Or you can just change it out because it's a 99.99% chance that is the cause.

yeah I just got my car fixed when this happened to me week before last. speedo/ odo quit working, and car stayed in "limp" mode which means the tranny wouldn't shift in anything cept reverse and while in drive it would stay in 2nd gear.... cost nead 300 bucks to fix for me

the sensor feeds into the tranny, so you have to open it up to find the sensor, which means change out tranny fluid and everything like that

NO NO NO!!! He just said he was MT NOT AT. You do not have to open up your tranny to change out the speed sensor. If the engine bay is anything like a 2gNT it will be right beside the rear tranny mount. It's held in by one bolt. It has a 3 wire harness going to it. You don't need to change the fluid to replace the sensor. I'm not sure how much the sensor is but if you do the labor it will only cost the new sensor and 30 minutes of your time.

You did.

Unless, that is, the speedo gear on the diff somehow stripped out, which is a virtual impossibility. I which case, yeah, they'd have to crack the case and replace that gear.

Generally, when it fails in an MTX, the sensor just needs to be replaced.

I am auto. It cost me $25 and 10 minutes to change the sensor. On an auto, not sure about MT, it sits on top of the tranny case right by where the stock airbox would be.

The check engine light went on last night so I ran the trouble codes & it was the vehicle speed sensor error. I took it to a parts shop & had them run there tester & got the same error so I ordered the new part. $47.99 & it will be here on monday. Now all I need to do if find where is goes. I looked in my Chilton's & it dont even mention it in there. emoji
