#32034, "Metal to Metal grinding sound in front of car."

I started hearing this metal to metal grinding sound up near what seemed to be the front of the car near the wheels. So I thought to myself what would cause something to start making a grinding sound all the sudden without hitting anything like a deep pothole or something. So I took it to a garage yesterday and today they called and says that my brakes/rotors look good bc thats what they thought it was gonna be when I described it on the phone. It turns out that my bearings are bad. They said its the bearings in the wheels that are dried up where the cv joint connects. Im thinking if thats the case then the rubber dish must of ripped and let water in and rusted since those are non-lubricated bearings. Anyway they go on to tell me they can't fix it. So now I had to make an appointment with another garage on tuesday to get it fixed.

Has anyone had this problem and if so how much was it to get it fixed?
And could the fact that I lowered my car with the prokit springs without replacing my stock shocks with an aftermarket set could have caused this? If anyone could answer any of those questions that would be great...tia

I called the local Mitsubishi dealer about 3 weeks ago about the ball joint recall and the first mitsu dealership said that its not for all 2g eclipses and for me to bring it in so he could check it out because he couldn't run the vin # because their computer was down. So I called another Mitsu dealer and asked them if I had any recalls to be done to my car and they took the last 8 numbers from my VIN# and said you have no open recalls on your car. So I assume that the previous owner took care of that or the mistubishi dealer that I bought it from which isn'the same one I called to find out about the recall. Its in a different state. I just wanna know how much im looking at in cost to fix this and if its due to my spring install without replacement of shocks along with the lowering of the car.

According to the recall note, they have to 'visually' inspect it. I went to a local Mitsu dealer here and they gave me those exact same BS. I told them that, if what that computer says is true, and you won't 'visually' inspect it, then the next time I drive my car and something happens due to the recall, I'll blame it ALL ON YOU. Oh yeah, I ask for a receipt just in case. Needless to say, 10 minutes later, he put me in a time slot for one of his mechanics to work AND replace the ball joint.

ok i just had my cv boot replaced by mitsubishi and it was 160 total.but since your whole bearing is gone it is going to be closer to 330. thease were the quotes i was given. oh and you can buy the whoul axel at napa for 100 and do it yourself but it is kinda hard i got the roter off and all the way to the flex rod or whatever it is called and quit it was to much of a pain in the ass. i just took it in. i have friends though that told me that they did theres and saved alot of money

It would be about a 3hours and 45 min drive. Its 205 milesaway but if you wanna make the trip ill pay you to do it and ill get to learn for myself then how to fix it. If not ill just take it to a garage or the mitsu dealer. What do you all think should I take it to the dealership or a garage???

OK I'm really starting to get annoyed now, its been 2 weeks now and ive been to 3 different garages. The first garage says bring it in and we'll look at it thinking it was the rotors, they say its not the rotors its your bearings and we don't do bearings here. So I then take it to a diff garage and they said its not the bearings its the transmission and we don't work on manual transmissions. Now I have an appointment to take it to a transmission shop next week. The thing that sucks the most is... that I had a 5 year 56,000 mile warranty and the 5 year was up july 11th of this year, 2 months...wouldn't you know it, I wish it was the milage bc I only have 52,000 on it now. Then I was thinking the transmission shouldn't be going out on it after only 52,000 miles. I got the car used and it had 39,722 on it. So what im asking is what do ya'll think it could be in the tranny? Maybe the bearings..I dunno. If it ends up not being the tranny, bearings, rotors then what??? I'm begining to hate this car. My turbo fund was up there now its about to go back to ZERO...very sad.

The brakes will make that noise if the pads get too far worn down. Check your brake pads. It will make a horrible, embarassing noise when they get worn down to the point where they need to be changed. It's a built in warning device.
