#31765, "JE Piston to Wall clearance?"

What sort of piston-to-wall clearances are recommended for my JE pistons?

The machine shop guys need a bit of information in this regard.

Also, does anyone know the gauge point on the pistons and what is should measure on the skirt of the piston?

I have a lot of other information that was provided in a recent post, but none of this was provided.

Thanks guys.

I got em' from another guy who didn't use them. (I think they're very slightly used)

8.8:1 JE's (and Crowers)

I've read a number of different things in regard to the Piston to wall clearance. Anywhere from .03 to .035. The different things I have heard about though is how DSMtalk 4g63 guys think that amount of clearance isn't enough about and supposedly the walls being worn down because the clearance is too small.

In any case, I'll report this to my machine guy and let him decide.

My spec sheet says .0030" clearance measured .50" up from the bottom of the skirt. This is for 8.8:1's also.

I cant remember exactly but stock is something like a minimum of .0005" although up to .0017" is within allowable use. Hell my Ross are .005" Note that forged pistons are smaller near the top where they expand more than at the bottom. The difference between measuring mine at top (where they calculated clearance from) compared to the bottom is about .001 or more (according to the data sheet they came with) so its important to use where the piston maker wants you to measure clearance from.

Stock Specs.

Piston to Bore clearance: 0.005" - 0.0017"

Give JE a call and see if they have a standard clearance for you.

I think that .005" is one of many Chilton manual errors. It just doesn't make sense for a stock clearance that wide. The manual uses .0005-.0017" measured from the bottom. My .005" allowed you to rock the pistons around in he bore once installed while the stock pistons dont budge installed in the block.
