ever since i got this car it ticked during idling. most of the time then other times it is just a queit as can be,? would you say its the lifters? ive done mods but no internal mods to the engine its all the same, the sound is loudest on the passenger side next/oround the timing gears..... tried marvel, and thicker oil,& it still does it. thought it was exhaust. but new headers didnt change it either. no power problems just that damn tickk kk kk kk kk, kind of like the 4g63 does.?

Did you put in a new exhaust manifold gasket when you switched headers?

When your car is cold, and you first start it up, feel your hands around the manifold, if you feel some puffs of air, you know what the ticks are coming from.

I know what sound you mean, sorta sounds like a woodpecker on plastic??

Dunno what it is, but I just swapped my engine back into the car after a rebuild and it doesnt do it anymore. I do have all new timing belt pulleys.

Hope that helps

do you mean there is supposed to be a gasket there? yes i put the new gasket in. its not the exhaust. i think its in or around the cams/cam gears. it has a deffinate rythem to it when it is happening but then it just comes and goes. mostly its doing it though.,

Yes we do, but i believe it is in the passenger side front fender near the charcoal can, and not in the engine bay.

it is the lifters, its the way dsm built them, mine does it too along with my freinds after about 30000 miles, you can get rid of the ticking by putting in newer dsm(if they fixed the problem) lifters or aftermarket, that should get rid of the ticking.

420A lifters don't tick like the 4G63 lifters you are talking about.

I had the exact same problem, but it wasnt too expensive. Our cars have hydrolic valves so it can't be lifters or anything. For me it was 3 rod bearings which where completely ruined. These kept hitting on the connecting rod wrong and ticking, but only at idle. I got it worked on and fixed for 250. Good luck

i live in elkin, does my profile say that everyone asks me that. hey jamie did you notice any power loss, i have none? just this damn tick, i do beleive that may be it if so. its engine internal it has to be, it does it with the rotation of the engine. i guess i might as well tear it down, hopefully with some stronger internals this will quit, there goes my turbo funds, but on the positive side when its time ill hold more boost this way. i wasnt planing on doing this yet but its to annoying, it must be done. any suggestions on internals, // preferences or bad products to stay away from.

well the reason I knew you were from NC is because of your name 2gdsm_NC lol. If you want to hang out with some fellow dsm peeps you should hit up carolinadsm.com I dont know where elkin is exactly, but we have peeps from just about everywhere in NC. We meet, as an entire group, atleast once a month, but most of the guys in the triangle meet up a lot more than that.

I had no powerloss at all, it drove exactly like new but at idle it would tick tick tick coming from around the valve cover. I thought it was a heat shield but it was the rod bearings. I'd bet you that it is the rod bearing's i'm 99 percent sure. But they said that if i had driven 5 more miles the engine would have siezed and been ruined. So if i were you i'd take it in fast before it becomes serious

thanks jamie, i will take it in monday. I guess i wont be driving it for awhile, untill its rebuilt. bythe way does anyone make a metal head gasket for our cars like the on greddy makes for the 4g63's. I would seriously like to have one, id hate to do all this and 5 mo. down the road blow out my head gasket. hey 1tuffrs about where do most of the meets go at, elkin is about 30 min. from winston, between mt. airy and wilkesboro.... really interested, but might have to wait now to get the car out. hopefully sooner than later..
