I just got my car back from getting my transmission fixed. Its works fine except it doesnt go into first gear. Since I had a aftermarket shifter in there, they wanted to charge me extra to look at it. They told me it needed to be adjusted inside the car, under the console. How do I go about making these adjustments? Thanx for any help you can give me.
BTW: Its a Sebring if that makes a difference.

Does the car go into other gears? If so, this is stupid, but try putting it in 2nd then into first or let the car roll a tad then try putting it into 1st gear. Sometimes the dogteeth in synchro are slightly misaligned and need to be rotated a tad to allow the gears to mesh.

It goes into all the other gears just fine. I drove it home from the place. I just had to start from second gear all the time. It gets annoying after a while.

I can't remember how the transaxle is set up in that car, but be sure that YOU can manually move all the gears from under the hood. On most the trans that are mated to the 420A (neons and 2gNT) you can grab hold of the gear selector on the trans under the hood. Don't do this with the car running! but there are probably 2 cables ran from the selector. See if you move it is sorta clockwise/counterclockwise motion. Keep in mind you must hear or feel it click 6 times (5 speed + reverse). If you can, then it's in your linkage, if you can't, then go back to the place and figure out what they did wrong. (I think you mentioned that your trans was worked on)

The shifter linkage is not adjustable on these cars as far as i know. Unless you have one of those POS B&M adjustable shifters.

let me get this straight, ok you just had your tranny fixed and you actually drove away from the shop that performed the work, knowing that it didnt go into first gear, I dont understand, they just fixed your tranny and its not working correctly, you should have never payed them and never drove away until the car was working correctly, sounds like they did something incorrectly to me. take it back and make them fix their mistake
