#31010, "what does a busted thermostat look like?"

im replacing my thermostat tomorrow so im kinda curious whether i will be able to discren if that was my problem with overheating or not, besides whether it runs fine or not. if i replace it and the car runs fine, no problem, but if i replace it and the car still overheats i would like to know whether the thermostat was broken anyway.

Well when my thermostat broke, it was in two pieces. Luckily it was in the winter so the car didn't heat up.

Broken in 2 pieces is rare. Normally it either sticks open or closed. Nothing really too special.

Start your car, leave the radiator cap open.Wait for the engine to heat up and see if the thermostat opens up.SOme shop even installed mine backwards when I went to take it out.I was overheating once too.I replaced the thermo 2X.Blew a headgasket.I still think it overheatd before I even blew the head.MIght be a warped head or a crack in the block.EVen a bad radiator cap was blamed. After all was said and done,I don't over temp no more but I notice that I loose coolant every couple o' hundred miles.
