#29975, "Pics of my pistons.... what happened?"

For those of you who don't know, to make a long story short... oil pan got busted, all of my engine oil hit the ground, and my engine LOCKED. The crank is locked tight.

What is the explanation for my pistons though? The piston coating is flaked off and still present in the chamber, as you can see in the pics... what happened?

looks heat caused.. i bet when ya lost the oil the internal engine temps shot through the roof (ceasing your crank and probably pistons too). have you disconnected the crank and tried spining it? cause it could just be that one (or two by the looks of it) pistons ceased.. and so ya won't be able to spin the crank unless you unhook the rods.

Did you have a ceramic coating on the piston tops? If not, it could just be carbon buildup that violently shook off from the pistons when the crank locked up.

No ceremic coating... it goes into the machine shop today so I'll see what they say.

That's just carbon that was present on the pistons tops. it is flaking off due to the humidity when exposed to outside air. I've seen it before, and it's almost 100% not related to your locked motor. That's going to be melted/seized main and rod bearings.

That's not your piston's "coating". Its carbon buildup.

Our stock pistons dont have any coatings.

Got it to the machine shop today and he really didn't know. Said it looked like it was running hot. It doesn't matter I guess, the JE Pistons are going in and I'll have my built block back on Friday or Monday.

Are you getting new cranks? Those main bearings must be toast like a sandwich!

Ahhhhh...the smell of burnt oil in the morning...

I'll know what can be done with the crank Tuesday afternoon. Hopefully it can be grinded but if not I'll be needing a new crank.

Kiku - Funny you say that because as soon as I pulled the head off, I got a big whiff of burnt oil... yikes!
