#29926, "Any other places to buy bottom end kit besides Howell?"

I am thinking that rather than buy a new car which would require a 4k downpayment I am gonna dump the 4k into my car... so the first step in this process would be a nicely built bottom end .020 over -- any other places I should look for bottom end kits... would piecing one together from here and there be cheaper??

Thanks for the help guys.

Also - anyone have the specific part numbers -- have a friend who works at a shop - might be able to get this stuff cheaper.

2003 VW GTI 1.8t.. I used to have a 95 Eclipse but well...water sucks.

Hahnracecraft has bottom end kits.....or at least they will sell everything you need.

Hard to beat the Howell bottom end price. I buy wholesale through a shop and cannot quite beat the complete package deal.

If you get the howell kit, get the JE rings instead of totalseal....IMHO. Too many people burning oil with totalseal....not sure why.

sorry no part numbers at this time.

Yeah the price on the kit is really good. But you can try to piece together a kit.

I think the Total Seal rings can be installed in a couple different ways and if you don't install them right for a street car you can have problems.

if you get the howell kit, is it possible to get the Je piston rings instead of the totalseal rings for the 8.6:1 compression? or will it have to be custom made?

You can order the JE rings from Hahn for $99. Just make sure to order the .020 overbore pistons, because the rings are for .020 overbore.

i know u can order je piston and rings from hahn for there 8.8:1 compression, but how about if i get the bottom end kit from howell? since there pistons are 8.6:1 and it comes with totalseal rings.. the totalseal rings are what i would like to change to je rings, but im not sure if they make it for the 8.6:1 compression?
thanks

I bought the howell bottom end kit and asked them to take the Total Seal rings out. I called Hahn and they shipped me a set of JE rings .020 overbore. I don't think the compression ratio matters, just the diameter of the ring, just make sure the bore matches.

I paid exactly $980 for the Howell bottom end kit minus the Total Seal rings. Howell doesn't charge shipping.

I ordered the JE rings from Hahn for $99 + shipping. I can't tell you exactly how much it was with shipping because I also ordered ARP head studs and a few new gaskets at the same time.

Everything is already installed, and I'll be passing 1,000 miles on the new engine parts today on my way home from work!! emoji
