#29672, "weird hesitation and intake backfire"

hey guys how've you all been. i've been away for over a month and haven't been here or posted since then. my problem is i'm getting a lot of hesitation when i accelerate out of the low rpms (under 3k) and it also backfires through the intake a lot unless i baby the throttle until i get past 3k. i'm assuming that it's my plugs since i haven't changed them in a year or so, but i just wanted to know your input. why would fouled plugs cause the backfire? i can see how it would cause the hesitation, but not the backfire. is there anything else that it could be and because this happened while i was away upstate for a month, i've had to drive it a lot while it was like this (about 1000 miles). could this have possibly done any damage? lastly, since i haven't changed them in so long, i forgot the type of ngk plugs that everyone's been running and what to gap them to, so if someone could just post that up i'd appreciate it emoji . tia

i had a similar problem (no backfire though), and it was my o2 sensor. Try unplugging it and see if it runs better.

First check to see if you have error codes 2. Check your vac hoses 3. make sure your spark wires are getting good contact with coil and plugs (and they are on correctly) 4. check the coil 5.maybe clean your throttle body get the crud away from your TPS and out of your intake 6.have you changed your fuel filter

Just some thoughts

This is a very common problem with 420a's.Replace your plugs (NGK V-Powers) and but some new plug wires.I guarantee your problems will go away. Also when you put the new wires on arrange them so they don't touch each other. What's happeneing is your plug wires are probably old and worn out and the spark is jumping from one wire to the next.Anyways good luck.

thanks for the input guys. now does anyone know the ngk plug #s and what to gap them at. also, could all this driving have done any damage to the engine? i have no cel, and didn't know it was possible to have codes in there w/o a cel being on. i'll check 'em. i thought about it maybe being the 02 sensor b/c my gas mileage has been pretty bad since all this started. also, i was sitting in my car before and the idle seems pretty smooth except every so often the engine will cough(the only way i can describe it) like it misfired or something. it's not extremely noticeable unless you're paying attention to it.

on the main site it says to get the brk5e-11's which are one range hotter and to gap them to 0.05", but i thought that people normally got one range colder, or is that only for the turbo guys? also, isn't .05 too big of a gap? i thought it was closer to .04".
