Can I remove the engine and leave the AT in place? Is there anything I should know before I try?

Hey, thanks for sending me the link... those are some great pics. It doens't show the engine removed with the A/T still in place, though. Should I just support the tranny with a jack and slide the engine over enough to lift it?

I remember someone posting about unbolting the flex plate from the torque convertor... any special tools required or is there plenty of room to get in there?

well considering i think it was a pain the ass to just drop the engine in (very akward). I think it would really suck trying to bolt the tranny up with the engine in the car.

3 out of 4 motor ounts are connected to the tranny. so if you don't have to undo any of those to pull the engine then you shouldn't need anything to soupport it

Well... tonight I tried to get the engine out but I can't get it far enough away from the tranny. The alternator & crank pulley are still on the car and that's what is stopping me.

Tomorrow I will remove the alternator, crack pulley, head, and then I should have plenty of room to remove the engine without the tranny.

Any other tips for me???

I would just pull the tranny and engine together, or else drop the auto tranny and then pull the motor. maybe pull the front and rear mounts from the tranny and let it point upto let the engine out? Just a thought. I will be dropping my transmission before I try to pull my motor out. Then again, I am also a 5 speed owner now...

Just thought I'd update on my situation. I did sucessfully remove the engine with the AT in place tonight. It was a bitch to do but I really didn't need or want to take the tranny out. This was an especially difficult project because my entire block is locked tight, which means I couldn't turn the crankshaft to unbolt the torque converter. I was able to conquer that by using an 18mm open ended rachet-action wrench, and I didn't have to remove the centermember.

I did remove all accessories, timing belt, cylinder head, and everything else. Here are some pics:
