OK, here we go. I changed my oil a few days ago and then drove it to school the next morning. Everything seemed fine then. I then was driving home for lunch when one of my friends pulled up at a stop light. We both took off casually but then gunned it. That is when the bad situation part comes in. I felt a loss in power, then my oil light came on, so I pushed the clutch in and the car died. I coasted into a parking lot where I discovered oil all over the underside of my car. I had it towed to a shop who just talked to my about this problem. It appears that I got a turbo oil filter, which caused my engine to lose oil and now the engine is toast. The guy at the shop did not say what exactly is wrong with it besides that the engine is going to either need replacing or rebuilding. Now here is what I would like all of you guys to do. What would you suggest I do at this point? Get a rebuild kit from Howell so I can turbo later on, or get a used engine, or what? I can not spend to much money on this, no more than say $4000 with labor and everything. Thanks for any and all advice

$4000 is a ton of $$ definitely rebuild if that is an option... and do it yourself with the help of some friends.... you'll learn alot about your engine.... have a fun time...save alot of money and you'll feel better about yourself in the end.......

Whatever your price to pay for this should be $0.00. They put the wrong filter on resulting in your engine being blown. If you wanna rebuild with better stuff find out how much it would be to do the stock rebuild and tell them to cut you a check then just use what they give you and a little more $$. Badda bing. It sounds like he did it himself. Tough break guy. Don't let it get you down much though. I've seen worse. I once seen a guy fill up a grand am with that sohc motor COMPLETELY full at a garage a friend worked at. The motor wouldn't even turn over. We laughed our arses off at him. He only lasted about a week.

ouch! sorry to hear that. hey guys, in these situations do you really need to replace the entire block? Definately the pistons and rods, but couldn't you just overbore the cylinders to take out the defects and undersize the crank

The block should be fine. Just over borer it .020 over and get thje correct fitting pistons.

I wish I had "only" $4,000 to spend on my car. If you do the rebuild yourself you should come out of it with a P&P, oversized throttle body, and a whole slew of new stuff. Hell...take the opporatunity to get better pistons depending on your future direction with the car. Turbo...go lower compression, NA go higher.
