#28887, "Final Drive Gear Mod"

Hi there,

I know this has been discussed before, tho not much, so I'd like to toss this one up again. Has anyone here installed this mod, and if so, did you feel the performance gain to be significant?

Also, where can I order the stratus gear from (I hear some guy on this forum sells them?). Lastly, how difficult was the install? Does anyone here, who has installed it, live on the east coast (who perhaps can offer hands on assistance)?

Thanks a bunch,
Han

i have a manual 96 rs, and ive heard that i can order the fifth gear for some sort of neon tranny and replace my fifth with it so i will have a lower rpm for my high speed cruising. can anybody elaborate on that at all? what i would need, how hard it would be, if youve heard of anybody who has done this... tia

I have an 2G Eclipse- I'm considering doing the final drive gear mod next month. Before I do I wanted to know if any of you know the actual draw backs to this mod? How much of the top speed is cut off and/or how bad is the top end acceleration affected?

the only drawbacks I heard of were things like the speedo being off abit, but you can fix that easily by taking it to the dealership and asking them to recalibrate it with the dbr3 tool or drb something like that

You will also see a 6% LOSS in fuel economy which shouldnt be a problem, and yes the speedo will be off a bit. Mines off approx 4 mph or so, I had my gf in the neon go 40 next to me and mine was at approx 36 mph.

the dealer here claims that they don't have the drb3. Otherwise, I'd already have mine on.

its not really top end performance, its top end speed, which for everyone is no biggie, unless you are hell bent on going 150 down the highway. Your just going to rev out the top end more with the final drive.

Ok this is a mod for those who dont care about going 150mph but want some better acceleration off the line etc..

This mod is for those who dont care about gas mileage.

This mod is for those who dont care if there speedo is off a bit.

This mod works awesome, mine is on and kickin'

and you probably have to go to a dodge/chrysler dealership (a 5 star one) to find the drb3 tool, but it exists I promise, and that will be used to recalculate the pinion angle to try to get the speedo closer to what it should be reading.

Thats all I need to know! All i needed to hear was the MPH were gonna be under instead of over.. I can't afford any more tickets or bye bye license (I'm not a bad driver, but I've had a few bad breaks, I swear emoji Anyway. Thanks

there is one important thing that the shop i got my gears from screwed up. there is a smaller gear and a larger gear, the bearings on the gears should be: smaller bearing on smaller gear and larger bearing on larger gear. mine was ass backwards and the bearings are pressed on so the only thing i could do is cut them off to get the part numbers off the back and order new bearings. this 1 hour mod put my car down for alost a week. just want to make sure no one else's bearing are backwards before they begin installation (like i did).
It's a good mod, i can tell a difference. we'll see next sunday (autocross):)

but i want to be able to have a higher top speed and not rev out as early. right now if i cruise between 90-95mph, my rpms are about 4k. id like for them to be lower at that speed (i guess im the rare idiot who wants to have a high cruising speed haha). but it would definately come in handy on long distance trips which i make often. id appreciate any help/direction anybody can give, the last link to some info on another board was not very informative. tia.
