good luck with what ever you decide, but I wouldnt take the 1300 you could sell parts out of it and make twice that from just this board alone, people are always looking for parts like ashtray's, engine, block, throttle body etc.. that list can go on and on, you could just put the car on blocks and strip everything out of it and make a small fortune from it

Hell yeah I bet he would take it for $1300. $600 and a used long block later your car will be on his lot selling for $7995.

You should be able to get a used long block for well under $1000 (half that if you look well) and it shouldn't cost but $500 more give or give $100 to put in. You can start here for pricing http://www.car-part.com 1rst thing you need to do is call around and find a shop that will just pull the head (ask "how much to remove my cyl head" only). Probably will cost a few hundred, then you can see whats really going on. There's a 90% chance your pistons and short block are in good enough shape. Might have a nic in one of the pistons but who cares. More than likely you'll just need to replace the bent valves and get a valve job.

Here is one way:
Set of 16 stainless steel swirl polished valves - $250 from Road
Race Engineering
3 Angle Valve Job, Hot soak head, mill head for evenness, etc - $300
New Head Gasket - $35
New Timing Belt - $90
Labor - $500

This is just appromixate of what you might pay, but it can be lower or more by hundreds.
