i can tell you but you may not like what i say. our cars are a dual coil system. meaning we have 2 negitives and 1 postive coming from the coil pack. so if you tap it into one of the negitive wires, it's only going to read half of what it should. unless the company you got it from preprogrammed it you're going to have to get a tach adapter.

What brand of tach do you have is it autometer? If it is you don't need a tach adapter. Let me know.

Since when don;t you need one with an Autometer, I just got mine and had to get the tach adapter for it. I wired everything in and got nothing....tach doesn't work at all...the adapter isn't that much sao i got one. How do you hook it up without one???? And yes I did make sure to switch the rotary switch on the back to 4 cylinder....

Hey whats up, hey everybody who has an autometer, you don't need an adapter kit. Go into the ECU in the engine. The lower connecter of the two, has a white wire with brown dots/specs on it. Tap into that wire to get your reading. If you tap into the coil pack you will only get half readings so you take it from the wire going into your ECU. On the 97 non turbo the ecu is right behind the factory airbox. You do NOT need an adapter..Try that and let me know how it works out. I have a autometer too, and so does my bro. It worked great for both of us

That is what I am saying mine was the same way, no adapter here. You just have to clip one of the two wires in the back of the tach. Either the brown or the orange can't remember. Just call autometer they will tell you which one to clip. Good luck

Thanks a lot guys, so I just have to tap into that white wire in the ECU, how do you guys do that, just take some of the wire insulation and hook the tach wire in and wrap it with electrical tape or what?...

No, either you can solder it to the ECU wire or you can use a wire splice. You can find wire splices at any auto parts store's electrical section. I would not just loop it arround and tape it you will not get a good connection. When you do hook it up however make sure you do put electrical tape on it for safety.
