what kinda radar detector is best in the 100-150$ range?? thanks!

hehe as long as it's not PA I don't care. I do slide over the VA border occasionally to visit family, but the road to their house is about 50 feet past the potomac, and they're only a half mile down the road. but I'll be at school in PA, and don't feel like getting busted for it whil I'm at school.

I got a uniden. It works, but I get tix b/c they see me, not b/c they radar me. Fuckin sucks. Theynever clock me, but they always get me for "unsafe speed" I feel like saying, how's it unsafe when I have control of the car and I'm alert and aware of my surroundings?

Yeah, keep speeding. You're going to get owned by laser or instant on radar sometime soon.

Radar detectors are pretty much irrelevant with the techology that police have today. All they will tell you is when a cop has already gotten your speed. It is up to the cop after that to decide whether or not he wants to ticket you, and more than likely if you've got a radar detector on your windsheild, he is going to know you are a "speed daemon" and give you a ticket instead of a warning.

A radar detector is nothing but peace of mind. Don't get a false sense of security and go around driving like a jackass. You *will* get caught and you *will* pay the price.

I don't believe that Chris. It all depends on where you live. Where I live the city has one laser unit, and it is rarely setup in my section of town. Although its true by the time you pick it up on your radar detector you have already be "shot", that isn't true for the older radar methods (like the ones in the police cars). I think radar detectors work good....not great, but I don't think their irrevelant at all.

BTW, I got a Whistler 360 degree radar detector. Forget which model it is though. Its pretty good considering it was $120, its got 360 degree coverage, VG2 protection, all radar and laser methods, quiet and city modes....its definetly saved me a couple times!

That's the same attitude I had with my radar detector...

...Then I was stopped by a police officer who's patrol car was equipped with instant on radar (as most are in this area).

Keep rolling the dice, you'll end up losing. Ask yourself if you can afford to lose. Can you afford the extra insurance costs, can you afford to pay the ticket, can you affort to pay a lawyer if need be? If you answer no to any of them, it definatly is not worth the risk.

The Cobra detects Laser too. I've only seen one Laser detector since I've had the Cobra. Also, most of the time I drive by cops, they don't even have the radars on. The roads I do speed on, I'm smart about, and I don't drive like a "jackass." I just speed.

I find it hard to believe that you drive that Z28 and don't speed.

I don't speed because I had my licence revoked. After I got stopped and the five months before it was revoked, I only went five over.

Laser detectors are meaningless. All you can do when your detector goes off for laser is look down and see how bad you're going to get screwed.

I have a Bel 950 Radar Detector and it saved my Butt so many times here in TX.

That thing picks up KA band 1 mile away. So many times there's a cops that sits under the bridge in the middle lane (On the grass in between the two freeways). My Bel 950 Radar detector picks him up before I can even see him.

The radar retails for $300.00 I got it for $160.00 because I bought two through the web (My buddy wanted one too) plus $15.00 S/H.

I couldn't live without it. Lot's of time I just like knowing where the cops are. Also in TX if you not going 80mph on the freeway they honk at you. Seriously.

somoene's a bit touchy today. Either they need to head to the store and hop on the cotton pony, or they need to keep someone from pissing in the corn flakes.
And fight it out in court? WHy it costs twice as much than paying the ticket.
And I didn't mean pay the ticket. I paid the lawyer to have it reduced. But still, that's $300 a pop. If you fight it out to get it completely dropped, then you more than likely have to appear in court. I can not get any more tix. I have had 2 reduced, and 1 prayer for judgement in the past 2 years.

Chris is right about laser detectors. they only work if the cop hits the detector. and instant on radar is a biatch too. but not all cops have these things yet.
Get the detector if you want, but be SMART. if you're going 120 when your detector goes off, you'll still get clipped at 100 and go to jail!
Edit:Oh yeah, and a radar detector won't tell you you're about to crash at high speeds and die :/

I guess the thing is that around here the cops have been wasting money on all of those high tech speed dectection devices. There is pretty much not a damn thing a radar detector can do for you over here. The only people who use radar like y'all discribe, leaving the thing on the entire time just to clock random people as they come, are the small town local cops. Those guys won't pull you over unless you are driving like 20 mph over or driving recklessly, so it is irrelevant anyway.

My point is don't complain about bullshit tickets if you aren't going to fight them. The tickets are just that, bullshit, I agree, but they will keep coming unless you do something about it.

radar is only useful within 1000 feet... radar detectors can sometimes pickup signals up to a mile away (5280 feet)
so... if your radar detector picks up a cop shooting radar at someone else... then you should be safe...
95% of the time i can gurantee you are not the first person the cop is shooting his radar at.
Having a radar detector gives you a better chance of finding out then not having one!
although the best defense is not to speed... but, if you are gonna speed, why not be equiped?

just abide by the law if ya aint got the money to back yourself up, since I'm broke right now I've been going speed limit, when I get paid, I'll drive like a jackass again, but just know that at any minute you'll get a ticket...my (future) brother in law is a state trooper here in TX, he said that most of his buddies will give a ticket 100% of the time if you have a radar detector, and will be more willing to give you a warning if you're a nice, respectful person, just be nice, it goes a long way. Think of the cop as yourself, if you have someone cussing at you, you're gonna want to get them back, if you have someone being nice, you'll be like, dont do it again.

may be a little late but i thought id give my two cents on this.
first off what z28chris said "All they will tell you is when a cop has already gotten your speed." very very very false. i have been in the car with friends and proven to them the ability of the detector. a friend and i were in my car on the way to tahoe last season on a tuesday morning (no cars on the road). we were only like 45 minutes from the resort and i was getting anxious. this huge down grade came up and banked into a nice turn. so i brought it up to about 90 down this 50mph highway. befor i knwo it my detector starts going crazy so i drop it down into fourth, lightly feather the brakes and get it down to about 55 just in time to pass the chp cop up ahead who was hiding on the hidden shoulder. and similar experiences have happened many times. but also when z28chris said "Don't get a false sense of security and go around driving like a jackass. You *will* get caught and you *will* pay the price." he was very correct. i hate kids who get detectors and think that they can speed all over town. i only trust my detector on my highspeed highway trips. and even then you cannont depend on your detector, you have to constantly scan ahead AND behind you while you are driving. and that is usually alot more awareness than most people can handle. and also very few detectors are usefull. before you buy one make sure you find some sort of web page that rates the effectiveness of each of them. you will be very suprised by the variance in quality. i use a cobra.

I will make my statement more specific. If the police in your area use the latest up to date technology, my point is completely valid. It is only false if you happen to run across some small town cop who uses decade old technology. If you run across a state trooper or a county cop, he will have up to date technology and he will catch you.

If you want to be a 100% safe then get a radar that has a jammer in it. Yes, it is illegal, but it will save your ass. My friend has one, he can go as fast as he wants by cops and it just shows up INV (invaild) on their radar, we expiremented with a State Trooper friend. He said he could still pull him for reckless driving, but he has no proof of his speed and therefor no leg to stand on in court. These units are very pricey, the cheapest I can get them is $480, but they are well worth it.

All I gotta say is all you guya are lucky radar detectors aren't banned in your state. Here in Virginia, they will ticket you for speeding, ticket you for using a radar detector ($150 fine) and confiscate the detector!!!
