#27231, "did we get dyno numbers on the TB spacer from Nopi?"

Did we ever see the dyno on the TB spacer with the " vortex" designs/ I know it got shipped to someone (?) but never saw a dyno on it after that...

98 GS
all the usual mods
AEM , Greddy, Blah blah blah
Pilot Motorsports sucks!

Skrilla did the test but was waiting for me. I'm also running one hopefuly on the 22nd at my friends work place on the dealerships dyno jet. Skrilla say an "average" of a 5 hp loss and 3 lb. tourque gain. the test Im running will give two graphs so to overlay to see the rpm ranges and the effects and a different car, so we will see what my car does. Althought there are now three companys making them. See page 13 of the Aug. Import Racer for another.

Alright so my friend and I took the car to get dynoed. The modifications are as follows:
AFX UDP
Stock TB
AEM Cold Air Intake
Greddy Headers
Greddy Exhaust
18x7.5 Konig replicas (talk about heavy)
Falken GRB 215's

With three runs the car made between 120-122 WHP, so an average of 121WHP. TQ was 119 through all 3 dynos.

With the TB Spacer HP actually fell a 5HP average. The positive part is the TQ increase with 2lbs-3lbs spread across the lower rpms.

So the results are this

5HP drop to 116HP
3lbs of TQ up to 122

My friend drove it around for the next few days and said it felt strong but he was noticeably slower (who knows, maybe 'caus of the torque). I suspected those results though for a couple simple reasons though. It's pretty understood in automotive use that lengthening the intake tract will aid in TQ whidh is why a lot of domestoc owners use the spacers. That's not the case in racing. The short trip for the incoming air lets a screaming engine breathe at high rpms. With long runners the air is promoted into moving slower. Slow air can't fill screaming cylinders . This creates better cylinder filling at low engine speeds and better combustion. Since this filling is done below the magic 5252rpm mark with the long runners TQ is produced instead of HP. Above this point more HP is made over TQ thus the reasoning for the short runners and high HP. TQ is decent and is, flat out all that is needed to accelerate, but when your TQ drops off and can't perform (this results is HP loss) then momentum is lost. HP keeps the car moving at speeds while TQ is what it takes to get it there and how fast it gets there. This is why Diesel engines are not ideal for racing. They develop a ridiculous amount of TQ but their HP figures are sad. What is asked of TQ is to be able to perform efficient enough to create a lot of HP. Without the HP maintaining speed it becomes VERY difficult.

I think 2 things help make more TQ with the spacer. The 1st is the fact that the spacer adds a hair over 3/4" to the intake tract. 2nd is that the spiraling creates an air tumbling effect which creates excellent low rpm combustion. The spiraling which creates this tumbling effect on the other hand slows down the air's etc.

On a side note the spiraling creates a VERY distinct, and FAKE, turbo whistle that couldn't be distinguished from the real thing. Talk about rice!! The negative about it is that is makes this horrible creeking sound at part throttle or low throttle, so you either have to be at high rpms or WOT

So in the end the creators of this TBS are BS'ing their customers toting a 12HP gain in small multi-valve engines, it's just not going to happen with this product.

I didn't want to post this information since I was about 100% positive of what would happen (especially with the spiralling thing). I was very hopeful though since Angel sent it to me for free. I was like shit if this makes power it will be the best investment I've ever made (lol Nothing). It turned out, on the other hand, to be a waste of time. It was SO bad that my friend came over, completely out of the blue and kinda in a bad mood saying (and I quote'), "we gotta take this off it's so fucking anoying"

With all those mods, you friend was only seeing a little over 120fwhp? I know the rims are heavy, and will cause some power to be lost, but damn. I remember seeing dynos of Eclipses with 17's and 18's and they only lost like 4hp.

Ya his rims are fuckin heavy. Something ridiculous at 30+lbs. I think it needs a tune up but whatever I think he shoud be in the neighborhood of 130, Oh well.

NA no, I'm waiting till I get some better camshafts so I can tune them with the cam gears

My best pull was 369WHP with 18 pounds no tuning and the 2.4L.

I'm hoping for close to 200WHP NA with tuning. I'll have to wait though for the cams. I owe 3 people money

yes, I think with only so much torque, those rims (and the tires) would sap the power on an chassis dyno, since you have to accelerate all that rotating mass.

Well, adding weight to the rims is like adding weight to the roller. emoji Makes it harder for the motor to turn the rollers.
