#25739, "Idle screwed up after rebuild."

I just got my car back today and I have 60 miles on it so far. When I drive the car its fine. But when it idles it sounds and feels like it has cams. It also dies at stop lights once in a while do to low idle when i let off the gas and push in the clutch. Its like the RPMS just drop and the engine cant stay running when they drop. I have a CEL code 43. It doesnt do it when the car first starts. After about 10 seconds it starts idleing bad. It seems to start idleing bad when the A/F gauge starts going back and forth. And it is very noticeable. I hope it is nt the timing. I dont think it is though becuase the guy who did it knows what he is doing. Could it be the IAC? I dont think it is because it never did this before the rebuild. Any suggestions?????

Keep driving around. Let the ECU relearn all the correct settings and you should be fine.

Thats exacty what I thought but thats exactly what was wrong with my car when I got it back from a rebuild. Mine was off to the point where the PCM wouldn't allow it to rev past 4500rpms (good for break in). Incidently it idled just fine with stock cam gears even that way off. I took it to the dealer after break in and got another timing belt while they were at it.

i replace the water pump my self like a week ago,and i have the exact same symptom, i feel like i have cams, I don't have a CEL because the sensor is only in one of the cams, there for i have my timing off in the other cam where is there no sensor. emoji wich is wich I don't remember but you should know emoji

I to have to leave it like that for at least 3 weeks, until i get paid, order a UDP and Cam Gears, and again take everything apart

Wich is Easier (sp??) try removing the timing belt cover (wich i did, and there is no space and is a bitch, or drop the motor mounts and drop the engine.

i know you just got a rebuild but i had the same problem.....
well what my problem was that 2 of my valve seals were gone......
that was the only problem that i found when i rebuilt the motor nothing else was wrong except for the 2 valve seals so i sent the head off had a 3 angle valve job done and i had the head milled 5k....
when i put everything back together everyting was back to normal no more rough idle.....but you just got a rebuild only thing i can say is maybe he messed up on the valves/seals somehow.......

One more thing what is a 5K head mill. Is that .050 or .005. I ask because one of them is pointless and probably wouldn't bring a trueness to the mill.

Thanx dude.

haha - Its either 5 thousanths or he plated the head with unobtainiom before the mill job. Is a valve seal like a guide or is it more like a seat? emoji

Anyway - Dave, when I had problems with the IAC it didn't even run well for 10 seconds. It just plain ran like shit AND I had a CEL. I would probably check the timing and compression(basically his work) if I was you. Even if you could check the cam gear marks that would probably be good enough - the timing is real easy to mess up......that sumbitch probably didn't torque the tensioner pulley enough.

I took a look at the cam gears. The teeth do not line up. Its like if they were closer the gears would fit inside one another. Like the tooth is lined up with the space between the other teeth on the other gear. Kinda like regular gears. Arent the teeth supposed to be exactly the same lined up like tooth to tooth not tooth to space between tooth? How do I get the arrows to line up? I have looked in that little window twice and I do not see the arrows on the gears. Looksing the car back to the shop when i get back next monday.

disconnect your relays near the battary for fuel, spark etc... open the little cover to the cam gears... it helps to have a friend help you out...one person cranks it for a slit second till you see one line on the gear, and the other person looks at the cam gears to see if they line up... there should be like a thin line of some sort on each gear, and on each gear they both should line up, if they dont then your off 1 tooth... what cel codes do you got?

the line on each gear should line up like this

I'd bet money that the timing belt is off. If its not installed and torqued properly, its very likely that its off a tooth. Even after a rebuild, it should run perfectly fine..

The marks on the gears are little dimples on the outside edge of the gear. You'll recognize it when it comes around.
