i got a short ram. but people say CAI is better. i made a custom pipe to go down to form a CAI, i didnt notice a difference, so i just took off that additional pipe and went back to short ram. i got a touchan...it was like $90 for cone and all. i have a friend who has an AEM, dont know how that does. short rams are louder from the front, sound kind cool, thought more interior noise.

I would make sure you get a cold air intake(cai), the companys i would choose from are Injen, Iceman, AEM.

I have a ram air and it is great. I got mine off of ebay for like 60 bucks and it does just as good as all the name brands. My buddy has a Iceman and all the mods I do and when we race we are pretty much neck and neck the whole time.

shoret ram is better for acceleration from a stop, CAI is better for freeway acceleration.

it depends... i know aem makes one for there cai but that is also an opptional peice. the bypass valve is basically just a peice that you would put on to make sure that you dont get water into your engine.

If you are going to be driving in 2 feet of water, then you should get the bypass valve. (sarcastic) The bypass valve opens up when your filter is completely submerged in water. So, no you don't need one. Its just for people who worry too much feel better.

reading that article iceman looks to be the one im looking for due to the low and midrange power. I understand that you do need a bypass valve is this correct.

how can you guys say that the performance gains are equal between the short ram and the cai? obviously there is something to getting the more dence air from outside of the engine bay, than cycling the hot air from the engine bay. i have the iceman, i do not have or need the bypass valve

^^what once was^^

^^what is now.. and permanently^^

WELL guys, SUNBLOCK is a retard. You NEED!!! the breather. Its just takes a few onces of water to blow your engine. AKA break a rod. I get my car back Tuesday after a month of fighting with the insurance company to fix it. I sucked water through my CAI in the Wal-mart parking lot and snapped a rod. They have to replace your motor. Just make sure to get the breather. I have a 99 rs w/nitrous and other stuff. emoji CAI defenetly makes the difference. emoji

IMO, and experience, short ram vs. cai is day and night. You get a noticeable difference with short ram, but with cai, that difference is atleast doubled. My car is a lot better sounding, and has more TQ/HP than it did with a short ram. I can definetely tell. And I have AEM. It is supposed to be best, but I'd say any aluminum pipe that goes down for cold air to reach it and has a K&N on it will do the same or really close. Don't get a piece of crap, but do what fits your budget, b/c I doubt there is much difference. Sometimes u get what you pay for, and sometimes u pay for the name.

Unless the whole filter is submerged, your not going to get water in your engine. Our engines do not create enough vaccume so suck up just a couple ounces of water by itself, but if the whole filter is submerged, and water is the only thing it can suck up, then your fuc**d.

i ran through a pretty small puddle and snapped a rod the number one rod, that's all that happend though, no crank dammage or valve dammage, anything like that, just the oil pan and no.1 rod but i got a whole new neon engine for 100 bucks with 11k miles on, got the hook up, just swaped the bottem end out, but i'm goin with the bypass valve this time, no more 3 weeks downtime.

I don't think the whole idea of taking in colder air into the engine is quite possible with current CAI applications. Think about it, once the air gets sucked in chances are that the pipe is already hot therefore heating up the air, then the air has to go through the hot enough intake manifold, so once the air gets into the combustion chamber chances are that is probably already hot anyway. I would say that the added performance that comes with an intake is the less air restriction that comes with the air filter, other than that the intake pipe itself is just eye candy.

So basically, you only realize you need the bypass valve, AFTER you get hydrolocked
