Total Seal rings, increase cylinder pressure by reducing blow by. BLOW BY IS BAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anybody that tells you otherwise I wouldn't let work on my lawn mower.
The PCV system on you car is designed to vent crank case pressure caused by blow by. Now with Total Seal rings blow by is reduced, so since there is no pressure to vent, sometimes the PCV system will suck out oil. This will cause consumption of oil. If you have this problem, then what you can do is this, disconnect the PCV and put a filtered vent on the crank case vent, not it is not postive venting. DO NOT BLOCK THE VENT.
If you still have oil comsumption, something went wrong with your ring installation.

It looks to me as if the pistons could have been installed backwards. They will go on the rod either way, and one what they will hit the bridge between the valves, and the marks look exactly like the pictures. To fix that turn the piston around.
If they were not put on the rods backwards, then I would think it was something unique to that engine. Possible the head has been milled, just because it was not milled by the own doesn't mean it was not milled by the factory to clear a blemish during assembly. To fix that, take a die grinder to the chamber and reduce the nub. The block may have been decked as well which could cause that.
Improper rod bearing clearance will allow the piston come up to high. Are the rod bearings in good shape?
Also removing a shim from the head gasket could cause this.

gary, all the bearings were new, the crank was checked for proper bearing clearance and was found to be okay, the pistons were installed with the JE logo facing the exhaust as JE informed me to do. The head gasket was a brand new MLS from the dealer. the head and block were decked, but i do not think much material was removed because when they were initially disassembled and checked for proper flatness they were already within spec. it could have possibly been a factory produced issue like you said, i'm not too worried about it, the pistons are finished, it looks like when they hit they canted to the side and messed the pistons up. i replaced them with new ones. I do have a question for you though, when i recieved my pistons from you i did not have a spec sheet inside like the new ones i bought from JE. so i had to find the clearance on my own. do the pistons you have usually come with a spec sheet? thanks for the info, I do have to say that the pistons make great penholders though =) james

Sounds like the decking and milling were your problem. It is always important to clay up the chamber it would have caught this.

They come with one sheet per order per part number. We order 24 to 36 pistons at a time, and they come with one sheet. So no all sets don't come with a spec sheet, but each of our orders do. We keep the spec sheets on file, if anybody needs a spec we have it handy when they call.

I think you should put a disclaimer on your site that states that this what need to be done to use these pistons. I'm sure that 90 % of the people on this site are not going to put their engine together and clay each cylinder and then remove the head again and see if there is proper clearance. I'm am also pretty sure that people who buy your kits assume that they are a drop in affair, no where does it say that you have to custom tailor your engine to use these pistons. I also do not feel that pistons that are supposed to fit in our cars should have to be hand fitted. It looks to me that this is just an excuse for bad engineering. When things are maufactured taking all tolerances into consideration you should have an acceptable fit EVERY time. When these tolerances overlap is when you have problems such as this. If these pistons were designed taking into consideration the manufacturing tolerances of the engine itself then this should not have occured, Believe me...I am an engineer, i know when something has been well thought out and when it hasn't. For anyone who wants them- I have the spec sheet from JE for Howell's 8.6 pistons. It was really hard to read, so I cleaned it up with a nice copier at work I'll mail it or scan/email it for free, just ask.
